Economic Roulette
Do hydrates, which pose so many problems, have any chance of being commercially exploited? The answer isn't easy. If we abandoned their exploitation, it would be the first time humans failed to overcome technical difficulties. On the other hand, the risk is significant—no one really knows what impact an accidental decompression of a large deposit could have on the climate. It's still unclear how to extract hydrates. Absurd ideas abound: spreading giant umbrellas over the deposits or building subsea processing plants. However, there are simple and practical proposals: methane ice can be heated in a drilling well, as is done in heavy oil extraction.
If I were to bet money on this roulette wheel, I'd hazard a positive answer – yes, humanity will tap into these deposits. It won't happen anytime soon – not until conventional bitumen deposits begin to run out, which is 30-50 years from now.
