Invisible stigmata

In some cases, stigmata are only subjectively felt and cannot be seen by others. This was the case with Saint Catherine de Ricci (1522–1589), a Florentine Dominican nun, as well as with several other stigmatics. This phenomenon is called invisible or internal stigmata.

Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1381) initially had visible wounds, but she asked in her prayers for them to become invisible and her prayer was answered.

Blood is said to have flowed seven times a day from the wounds of the Venerable Gertrude van der Oosten (1330-1358). Alerted by the many people who crowded around her to witness the miracle, she begged for the gift to be withdrawn and for her prayer to be answered. The blood stopped flowing, but traces of the wounds remained as colorful scars.
