Part 39
The entire way, she thought about her grandmother. She couldn't believe that this bright woman had forgotten to take her insulin dose for the night, knowing that it could end in her death or another coma. She even had the impression that the woman who was her grandmother's neighbor was right. Perhaps her grandmother was troubled by something and decided to end her life... She got out of the car and was delighted to see the light on in the living room. Daniel didn't know they were coming; she would surely surprise him. She left her luggage in the car, walked to the door, and was surprised to find it unlocked. She entered, locking it behind her, and headed towards the living room. When she arrived, what she saw made her recoil. The fireplace dimly illuminated the naked bodies of Daniel and Natalia, which were scantily covered with a blanket
. "Amelia, honey, what are you doing here? You weren't supposed to be back yet," Daniel began first
. "I was supposed to," she said in a slightly amused voice, seeing that they were both behaving like little children caught red-handed.
"Amelia... I'm sorry, I..." she couldn't finish . "I'll
go for a walk and then I'll go home. We'll talk tomorrow, Daniel, bye."
She left the living room filled with joy. They had been alone for a long time, now that they were together, the two people closest to her would always be close to her. Leaving the house She felt a strong but warm wind blowing against her face. She decided to head towards the well at the edge of the forest. It wasn't far, but the walk there would take her long enough for Daniel and Natalia to calm down and gather their composure. She loved them both very much and was happy for their happiness, but she knew that they were jealous inside and out. The sky was already dark when she reached the well's source. She sat on a bench nearby and admired the stars. She was arranging various collections, remembering how she used to do it with her father as a child. Somewhere in the distance, she heard the call of an owl, and from time to time, something moved in the bushes. Amelie was gripped by a feeling of fear. It was getting late, so Amelia decided to return. She heard more sounds from the forest and after a moment, the quick footsteps of some animal. Her heart was pounding like crazy, and she started to run despite herself. She knew she shouldn't make any sudden movements in the presence of any animal. Escape was useless, as the animal attacked her from behind, jumping on her back and knocking her to the ground. She lay numb on the grass by the road, waiting for further attacks, which, however, did not come. The animal circled her and began licking first her hands and then the exposed parts of her face. The girl slowly raised her head to look at the attacker when she heard a menacing voice coming from near the well.
"Sonia, come here," a male voice said, and then the girl heard his quick footsteps and the beatings the dog received for disobedience. She quickly got up and noticed a Dalmatian dog, held on a leash, happily waving and whimpering, wanting to run to her. "
Sarunia," she shouted joyfully, summoning her lost dog. The dog didn't wait for permission and broke free from its new owner along with the leash. Amelia fell to the ground again, knocked down by
the dog. "Sara, Sarunia, my darling dog, come on, enough of these caresses, come on...!!," she shouted joyfully, caressing the dog everywhere she could.
"What are you doing?" asked the man, who had been closely observing the Dalmatian and Amelia, who was on her knees like a child, playing with the dog
. "Oh, "Excuse me," she said, trying to straighten her clothes, which were completely dirty and wrinkled, creating an artistic mess. "My name is Amelia, and that's not Sonia, it's Sara, my dog. Where did you find her? She's been looking for almost two weeks without success.
" Krzysztof shook her hand in greeting, and she almost groaned in pain because his handshake was so firm. "I didn't find him, but I bought him, and if you think I'm going to give him back now, you're dead wrong," he yelled. "
But he's my dog," she whined, fearing she might lose her beloved animal forever.
"You should have watched over her!"
"But you have no right..."
"I do," he yelled again, grabbed the dog's leash, and pulled him against his will. "
If you change your mind, I live in an old villa near the mill," she shouted after the departing man
. "I doubt it." She heard the reply from afar.
She turned around, knowing there was nothing for her there, and headed towards the house. When she got there, she didn't notice any lights on anywhere. Daniel was surely already asleep. So she followed him...
part 40
Someone knocked on her door. It was only nine o'clock, and she'd been in the office for at least two hours. She could have convinced others that she did it to catch up on work, but in reality, it was Wiktor. She was terrified of meeting him in the company hallway. Her wounds weren't healed enough yet to open and show them to the whole world, which was just waiting to infect her with some filth. Now she was catching up. The secretary did what she could, but some things were irrevocably something only Amelia could handle. It wasn't much, but she hadn't finished with it since morning. She was just thinking about where to put all the things she'd accumulated in her car while working here when that insistent banging on the door interrupted her again. Nervous and a bit incited, she finally let him in. The door opened, and Wiktor appeared. She saw him for the first time since that fateful day. events in the square in front of her grandmother's house. He looked bad and it struck her in the first second of this visit.
"How nice of you to visit us," he growled, twisting his face into an unpleasant grimace.
"Did you want something?" she asked, returning to her previous position
. "Could you show at least a little interest in the person you're talking to?" he growled again and demonstratively sat down in the armchair opposite her. However, he didn't notice the terror in her eyes, which was caused by nothing else but the awareness that he was so close to her. " Forgive me
, but I have a lot of unfinished work and I plan to deal with it today, tomorrow
at the most." "You've got to be kidding if you think you'll manage, it will take you at least a week
." "I won't sit here all week, someone will take over my duties tomorrow or the day after, depending on how long it takes me. In any case, I can see the end now," she said firmly, fearing his reaction to this news
. "Are you mocking me, or are you really responsible? Don't forget that you are." "A co-owner doesn't write offers to the newspaper for such positions, you either have to eat or buy shares," he shouted, standing over her with the condescension she so disliked. He was about to exchange further arguments when Daniel barged into the office. "
Amelka, I know you're busy. Karolina told me you didn't let anyone in, but I need to talk to you.
" "Daniel," she growled warningly
. "Listen, there's nothing between me and Natalia, we just... "
Stop it, I've had enough of all this, no! I've had enough of you, you're both hopeless.
Both of you?" Daniel asked, surprised, and only now did he notice that his brother was also in the room.
"Yes, both of you, I'm going for lunch, and when I get back, you're not supposed to be here. I'll talk to you at home, Daniel." She got up from her desk, left the office, and closed the door with a flourish, making a lot of noise. She was angry with them and with herself for not being able to keep her temper under control. She quickly descended the dozens of stairs and, when she reached the bar in the basement of the building, through a rather dark corridor, she sat down at one of the empty tables. There weren't many people here at that hour; it was still too early for lunch, and it was almost time for a second breakfast, as it was only ten o'clock. She ordered something quickly, and while she waited, she calmed down and gathered her thoughts.
"Hello, princess!" a cheerful voice snapped her out of her thoughts. She lifted her head and saw a happy Konrad
. "Hi, it's great to see you." I see." She smiled at him and hugged him in greeting.
"Can I join you?
" "Sure, sit down." She motioned him to a seat at her table.
"I knew you'd be at work today. Honestly, I was planning to come over. " "Right
? With something special?" "
I already have photos, I hope you like them."
"Really? Fantastic. Do you have them with you or in the office?"
"Here I have it," he said in a cheerful voice, seeing her approval. He pulled a thick gray envelope out of his brown leather bag, which had clearly seen and been through a lot. "
Oh my god, how great, and look how funny I turned out.
" "Well, absolutely brilliant." He smiled and chose the coolest shots to show her.
"Konrad, what are you doing here?" They both looked up and saw an angry Wiktor
. "Hey man, listen, join us, we have tons of photos from the seaside, you can see them too..." He didn't finish because Wiktor immediately interrupted him.
"You have them?"
"Yeah, me and Amelia, imagine we met on the Baltic Sea when I was on vacation." Amelia's heart was already pounding. Wiktor's half-sad, half-angry look disarmed any willpower in her, but aroused a desire that was so cruelly forbidden to her. " Unbelievable
," he said ironically, assessing her again with his gaze.
Part 41.
"Unbelievable," he said ironically, assessing her again with his gaze
. "Are you sitting down and looking at us, or are you just going to stand over us and bother us
?" "I won't watch you get roughed up again, only this time on foreign soil.
" "Wiktor!" Konrad shouted warningly in defense of Amelia.
"I won't let myself be offended, you shouldn't care what I do. To me, you're just a co-owner of our company. I don't want you to control me, I don't do that, so I'm asking you to also treat me with the same distance and not ruin my image with the employees," she said sharply, too sharply. She knew the employees in the bar were looking at them with interest. When she turned around, they pretended to eat. She didn't care what they thought of her because she knew perfectly well that they would forget about the whole incident before she left the company. It hurt her that Wiktor judged her so much and treated her so badly. She still loved him and wanted to be perceived as the best by him, but with poor results
. "You say that as if it bothered you at all." It hurt Amelie. She wanted to be seen in his eyes for the holidays, even though she knew they would never be together, but he treated her like an ordinary person. a whore standing on the street waiting for an opportunity
- do you want anything else?
"Yes," he said sadly, his gray eyes moistening, and the girl immediately felt sorry for him. "You're to come tomorrow at ten o'clock to this address." He gave her the law firm's business card and added, "Grandma's will will be read tomorrow. If you don't come, you'll waste everyone's time because the will won't be read without you.
" "But I'm definitely not on the list of heirs, so why should I come?" "
I hope you're not, but you have to come anyway. If you don't come, I won't be the one to inform you, Grandma's lawyer will.
" "Is that all?" You'll take up our entire meal break
. "Yes, and when you're done entertaining each other, Konrad, come to me, we need to talk," he said as he left, and headed for the stairs leading upstairs.
"What happened to him? We've been friends for many years, and he's never behaved like that towards me, let alone towards anyone else?" Women, said Konrad, confused by Wiktor's behavior,
"It's because of me, it's my fault, I'm sorry,
I don't understand..."
"I'll tell you everything if you promise not to cheat on me in front of him," she said sadly, ready to tell him everything that had happened recently.
"No, you've got to be joking, how can you even ask about that? It's obvious I won't cheat on you."
-Okay, I don't know if you remember, but I had a boyfriend in Łódź. He lived there because that's where her university was; he studied. He was going there one day. I met Wiktor on the train. We liked each other immediately. We broke up at the station and everyone went their separate ways. When I got to Filip's, it turned out he had been cheating on me with some girl. I was pregnant at the time. I took this fact very hard, and Wiktor found me in a serious condition and took care of me. We visited his grandmother in the hospital, and she woke up after a long coma. Wiktor had to stay, so we didn't go back together. He stayed with her in Łódź. I had a car accident, lost the baby, but also my memory. Wiktor took care of me. We started dating. I didn't know Wiktor was my brother then...
-Who is he? - asked a terrified Konrad. is it possible?
-Unfortunately, it's possible, please don't ask how because it's too long a story. Anyway, after one night spent with Wiktor, I woke up and realized with horror that I had just spent the night with my brother. I couldn't see him, and we were both suffering terribly. He thinks everyone is my boyfriend and that hitting on them is my hobby. He also thinks I'm with Daniel, his brother, but that's not true. He simply helps me as a brother. I don't want Wiktor to know he's my brother; he wouldn't be able to bear it. It's enough that I'm suffering. I
still love him very much, but unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about it. We have to endure it somehow. I really wish it would end, but it probably never will.
-Amelia, whose child is this?- She lowered her head and he already had an answer. She omitted this fact on purpose, thinking he would forget, but that was the most tragic thing about this whole situation.
I really feel sorry for you and now I understand his behavior. He's just jealous of you, no wonder he's jealous, but I don't know if you're doing the right thing by not telling him he's going to have a baby and that you're siblings. If he finds out from someone or by accident, he'll resent you for not telling him. Believe me, he'll still suffer, and he'll resent you for not trusting him and not telling him. He won't see that you wanted to protect him from something he could have dealt with.
Part 42.
The day flew by. She didn't even realize she was already sitting in her car, waiting impatiently, or maybe even bored, for the gate to open. The previous ceremonial of entering and arriving at the house didn't last very long. Loaded with groceries, she headed towards the kitchen where she found Daniel sipping orange juice.
-Hello Amelia - he said a bit confused
-Hi, I'm really tired today, would you also find a glass of juice for me?
"Of course!" He quickly got up and after a moment he handed her a drink. They sat together at the kitchen table, which was now cluttered with grocery bags and grocery bags.
"Amelia, I don't even know what to say." He paused
. "As for Natalia, I'm really glad you're together. I love you both and I hope you'll succeed and be happy.
" "Yes, thank you, little sister, but you know she doesn't know we're siblings." "You
haven't told her, have you?" she asked quickly, afraid that her secret might eventually reach Wiktor
. "No, but..."
"Please... promise me you won't tell anyone, I
'm begging you." Daniel would never admit he didn't want to do this at all. He promised his sister, even though it was in his best interest. Natalia felt disgusted with herself at the thought of betraying her friend. Daniel wouldn't do it without Amelia's consent. He could have explained to her that he had nothing in common with Amelia, at least not matters of the heart. After repeated insistence from his sister, he gave in and promised not to say a word. He loved her very much.
"Why didn't you tell me Grandma died?" she said dryly, her eyes twinkling even more.
"Forgive me, I forgot you liked her. I wasn't at the funeral, so I thought you wouldn't go either. Sorry, I'm selfish..."
"How is it possible that you didn't go to your own grandmother's funeral?" she asked, indignant and confused. "
Quite simply, I didn't go, and now
you know that's not what I meant. Why didn't you go?"
"They never liked me, neither my grandmother nor my grandfather. It was different on my mother's side, but those grandparents seemed to have no idea what Wiktor had in common. I was always worse, second best, or even invisible because I was so inconvenient
. What nonsense are you talking about...
"When I didn't have to," he continued, paying close attention to her words. "I didn't go there. When my grandfather died, I wasn't surprised that Wiktor was the only one to inherit the tenement house. I was sad, but I didn't let it show." Amelia noticed a tear slowly forming in her brother's eye and then slowly running down his cheek, leaving a thin, wet trail. "It's not his fault they singled him out like that. At first, I thought maybe I was doing something wrong if they treated me like that, but the older I got, the more certain I became. It was because I wanted to please them, and I was usually more polite than him.
" "And are you too?" Are you going to show up for the reading of the will tomorrow?
- Yes, my grandmother probably took pity on me and left me the cottage, which is worthless
- don't say that, it's very valuable to someone who can appreciate it, if that happens, I'll gladly buy it from you
- no problem.
She also told him about yesterday's incident at the well. He was outraged that the man hadn't given her the dog back. If he had demanded money, Amelia would surely have paid, so he didn't understand what was going on...
Part 43
Amelia woke up quite early, bright rays of light were creeping into her room. She got ready quickly. She planned to go to the company first and do some work, and only before ten o'clock go to the lawyer's. And so she did. At ten o'clock sharp, she crossed the threshold of the office. She dressed in one of the newest and very elegant suits she had recently bought. The beige material contrasted perfectly with her darkly tanned skin and raven hair. The buttoned and perfectly fitted jacket revealed her ever-enlarging breasts due to her pregnancy. Her entrance caused quite a stir; no one except her brothers knew that she was also on the scene. She sat down next to Daniel, who had arrived earlier. She greeted him quickly, and the lawyer appeared. He sat in front of everyone behind a large black desk and looked rather menacing, or maybe it was Amelia's imagination. The man began reading the regulations, which seemed to stretch on the page. After about half an hour, he finally moved on and began reading how his grandmother had distributed her estate. There were quite a few relatives gathered in the room, most of whom she didn't know. From what she gathered, her father's mother was very wealthy. Even though she had to distribute the estate to others, she also had something to give them. She didn't care what the others received. She waited for the moment when the man read her older brother's name. She knew that if he was practically ignored, he would feel hurt again. She had seen the pain in his eyes last night.
"All the shares in the photography company and the house in France are inherited by her older grandson, Daniel Adamczyk." Amelia looked at her brother. He didn't say anything. She knew he was shocked. Her grandmother surprised him, and in a positive way. After all these years, she showed him the love she had for him.
"The house in Łódź is given to her younger grandson, Wiktor Adamczyk, and Amelia Karpaczyk, with one stipulation: if they both want half of the house, they must spend every weekend together for the next six months. If this rule is broken by any of the previously mentioned people, neither of them will receive the building, which will automatically be donated to charity. To ensure that this wish is fulfilled, Mrs. Adamczyk's closest neighbor will visit the house on Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings, or more often if necessary, and will keep notes for my documentation. Amelia felt faint; it was impossible for a woman to play such a prank on them.
"Amelia Karpaczyk also receives a set of jewelry with an attached letter, and a second letter, which she will receive today, but can only open on her wedding night," the lawyer continued. After hearing these last words, Amelia felt herself blushing. She couldn't believe what was happening; her grandmother had mocked them. Fortunately, the meeting didn't last long; Amelia collected the jewelry and two letters and returned home with Daniel. She couldn't go back to the office. The news she had just heard had completely shattered all her plans. They were both silent the entire journey. Her brother probably sensed that she couldn't talk now and didn't encourage her to do so. They only spoke when they were home.
"But the number from that cottage, I simply don't believe it, our grandmother has just made you up
." "You see, she hasn't forgotten about you after all...
" "Well, I have to admit, no, surprised." I'm here, and of course I feel appreciated," he said, smiling
. "Sorry, I'll go home. I have to think it all over. I don't want to lose this house, but..." her voice broke. "Before six months are up, I'll be dealing with my belly, and I promised myself that Wiktor would never know about our child." "
Don't worry, I'm sure everything will work out. Go now, get some rest. We'll think about it tomorrow
. Tomorrow's Wednesday, the weekend is fast approaching. I have to make this decision now..." she said, her voice breaking
. "That's not true! You don't look pregnant yet, and if it gets as tragic as you say, you can always stop going there." Amelia agreed and headed towards her room. She didn't want to see him every week. She thought she'd freed herself from his control by running away from the company, and now she had to see him every week and spend two days together. Alone because her grandmother wished it? No, that's absurd. She can't sacrifice her child's happiness and her own peace for this house and for the wishes of an elderly woman who was indeed her grandmother. She knew that if Wiktor wanted any kind of intimacy, she wouldn't be able to resist him; she was still too weak, and yet they couldn't be together. What should she do? She sat on the bed and began to cry quietly, stroking her belly as if to soothe the child in her womb. Just as quietly, she asked herself, or perhaps the child, what she should do, what she should do. The unopened letter lay on the nightstand, and she was afraid to reach for it. She didn't know what it contained and was afraid to find out. However, after a long moment of reflection, she reached for it, snuggled against the pillow, and opened the envelope...
Part 44
She opened the envelope and slowly took out the letter. On the page, she saw slightly irregular letters, reflecting the shaking of her grandmother's hand. Amelia dimly saw the words, which were spreading out more and more on the page through the tears welling up in her eyes. She began to read aloud: "Dear Amelia, I know we might not see each other again before I die, so I'm writing this letter to you. I've always wanted to meet you. I knew I had a granddaughter, and I prayed every day for you to be well in this world. Jerzy told me about you, but he wasn't able to be with you in your life either. However, you still have time, which I don't. I'm very glad I met you before he died. When Wiktor brought you to me, I didn't know who to thank for this miracle. He's a good boy, don't hurt each other. I know you're both suffering, but everything will be alright soon. Believe me." That everything will be alright. Talk to your father and he will help you solve this mess. Trust me, everything will be alright. I really regret not being able to attend your wedding, and I know that this great celebration will take place soon. A beautiful girl like you won't remain a virgin for long. I only hope that my wish will come true, but that will be in the second letter. However, I want you to have the jewelry I gave you on your wedding day, just like I had it. It's a family heirloom, and I'm glad I can give it to my true granddaughter. I love you very much and I will always be with you even when I leave this world, your old lady." Amelia sobbed, hugging her pillow and curled up like a child on the bed. Grandma truly loved her and always wanted to meet her, it was so beautiful. She was going to talk to her father, but why would she, since he was acting like a child? He considered her relationship with Wiktor For something obvious, and she couldn't understand it. He was behaving like an overgrown child. Grandma's words were swirling in her head, recalling new sentences every now and then. She sobbed in despair. Grandma thought she would reconcile with Wiktor, but she couldn't. He kept pressing her, wanted her to come back to him, and when he failed, he accused her of having an affair with every one of her friends, even her own brother. It was beyond her. She couldn't live with it. How then was she supposed to endure weekends with this man under the same roof? It was pure torture! She fell asleep while these thoughts were on. This day full of such unexpected events had completely exhausted her, and she needed sleep. She woke up only in the evening. She smelled the delicious aroma of some food coming from downstairs. Every now and then, she could hear Daniel's off-key voice singing along with some singer whose song was currently playing on the radio. radio. She climbed out of bed, surprised that she had slept so long, straightened her tangled hair, and washed off her smudged makeup. She went downstairs, drawn by a beautiful scent. Her stomach needed food, and this was certainly delicious. She went to the stove and noticed that Daniel had made a whole plate of sandwiches, a cake was already baking in the oven, probably a lamb cake, and a pan with scrambled eggs was on the burners.Mhm, delicious, she thought.
"Hi, honey, how did you sleep?
" "Thanks, I got some good rest." She smiled faintly at him and pulled a dessert plate from the cupboard to serve scrambled eggs
. "Leave her alone today," he shooed her away with a dish towel and quickly spooned the scrambled eggs onto the plate. A moment later, sandwiches, scrambled eggs, and a cake were in front of her, cooling by the open window. A real treat. "
Have you thought about what you're going to do?"
"Yes, but I haven't thought of anything," she said, making a sour face.
"Mhm, that's not good, but we'll manage somehow and figure something out. You know, I thought that after all, since you don't want Wiktor to find out it's his child, we could tell him openly right away that you're pregnant with me. After all, he thinks we're a couple, right? And on top of that, you're afraid he'll want to come back to you. If he knows right away that you're pregnant with me, he won't even come close to you!" he said, while devouring his dinner. Amelia thought about what he said and replied, surprised. "Would you really make a top for me? It's a huge sacrifice! I can't force it out of you." "
Honey, what are siblings for?"
"But he's your brother too!"
"But you're in a tougher situation!" "That's
not
true." "Of course it's true, he doesn't realize anything, you're trying to protect him, and as a result, everything is taking its toll on you and my nephew's health." He started to lie to her.
"And maybe my niece's." She also said this cheekily, until Daniel comically tried to be outraged at the thought of a girl being born, and what then? She started laughing, as she hadn't done that in a long time.
"Don't joke!" he said, clearly serious. "And who will I play football with? As far as I'm concerned, you can even give birth to twins, as long as
the baby is healthy." "I hope you won't be disappointed, because it doesn't matter to me, as long as the baby is healthy ."
"Yes, you're right, but you know..." he made a humble face...
Part 45
Amelia got up from the desk and started bustling around the cabinets. She had to put everything into the boxes she had brought. From the store. She hadn't been talking to Daniel for long last night, so she got up early and got to the office quite quickly. There weren't many cars on the city streets in the morning. She leaned down to the lowest shelf and slowly put away the items. Someone knocked on the door, and her heart sank. She knew who to expect.
"Come in," she heard her own thin voice emerging from her, against her will. The door slowly opened, and indeed, Wiktor entered the room. She smelled the strong scent of his aftershave and felt nauseous.
"I'm sorry," she said quickly, passing him with her hand over her mouth. She ran to the toilet and vomited. This had only happened to her a few times, only when she was surrounded by strong odors. She raised her head from the sink and noticed Wiktor standing over her, pale as a sheet, looking at her uncertainly. "
Are you feeling okay? Did you get food poisoning?" he asked worriedly, and she saw concern for her in his eyes. "Calm down, calm down, he doesn't care about you, he can't care," she mentally scolded herself and replied,
"It's okay, let's go to my place because someone might misunderstand your presence here," she said, trying to defuse the tension that had built between them.
When they reached her office, she didn't stop packing. She took things out of drawers, cabinets, and all corners of the room. Wiktor was silent for a moment, but finally, he seemed to lose it and said somewhat indifferently
, "Are you really going to stop working here?
" "Yes...
" "Is it because of me?
" "What kind of ideas are you coming up with
?" "No, I'm just asking... I'm sorry
." "You're welcome..." "Are you just going to stand there or are you going to tell me why you came?"
"I'm sorry, I was a little surprised by this sight. I thought you were teasing me yesterday...
" "Wiktor, I..." she turned to him and noticed tears in his eyes. "I can't work under this kind of pressure. Besides, I'll be doing what's always interested me and I'll be home at the same time." "So
it's because of me, I knew." He slammed his fist on the table and turned even paler, if that was even possible. "Amelia, I don't want to hurt you, I..."
"I understand you, Wiktor, and that's why please don't make it harder for me to do what I'm doing..." Her voice broke, and she felt that if she continued to look into his big, sad gray eyes, she would soon cry. No, I have to be strong! She turned her head clumsily, continuing to pack. "Tell me why you came here and go!"
"Yes, I'm sorry, I'd like to know if Grandma's house is important to you, or if you're completely indifferent. I'd like to know if I can count on your presence this coming weekend?
" "Yes," she said curtly, and a moment later she heard him quietly close the door behind him. He didn't say goodbye, didn't even say a simple hello, goodbye, or anything like that. She gave vent to the emotions that had been welling up inside her for the past ten minutes and began to cry. She sat on the floor and simply cried. She couldn't control it. It was stronger than her, like most things. She couldn't cope; so much misfortune had already befallen her that many would be lying in their graves, although if it weren't for Daniel, she would share their plight. She stood up and, through her still-unwiped tears, noticed Wiktor standing in the doorway.
"Why are you crying, is it all my fault?" He approached her and hugged her, even though she resisted. He slowly wiped the tears from her cheeks and gently stroked the skin of her face. "Why did it all turn out this way? Why? Tell me, what connects us that we can't be together? What? What's so dark that you don't want to be with me?" As if in a fit of rage, he shook her so she understood what he meant
. "Viktor, let me go...
" "No, I won't let you go," he shook his head. "I won't let you go until you tell me why you walk around as if you were taken down from the cross and torment yourself. I know you suffer just like I do..." His voice broke
. "Let me go, it hurts.
" "Your indifference hurts me too, I've been suffering for a long time and you don't seem to pay any attention to it at all
." "I know perfectly well that you suffer and don't say I don't care because you know perfectly well that That's not the case, but I won't let you treat me like that because I'm pregnant and it might harm me! She screamed, and he, as if struck, backed away from her, violently opening the door and running out of the room, only to have it slam behind him with equal force.
Part 46
Now she had nothing to count on, every weekend would be pure torture. Wiktor, despite his earlier suspicions, would now be one hundred percent certain that she had someone on the side the whole time and that all her acquaintances were not just colleagues or friends, but simply lovers. She locked the door to prevent an incident like the one before and slowly sat down, leaning her back against the door. Why was fate trying to torment her like this? Maybe it was because she was so weak? Yes! She absolutely had to get herself together, and it would be up to her how her life would unfold, not anyone else's! She quickly finished packing and left the letter on her desk; she would hand it in tomorrow. She left the room, laden with two boxes, and bumped into Wiktor again. He was leaving his office. He lowered his head and pretended he hadn't noticed her. She walked slowly to avoid falling. The two boxes she was carrying were quite heavy, and after a few meters, it had started to bother her, and the car wasn't close. She was just sitting down next to the water container to rest when she heard Wiktor's voice behind her.
"Give it to me, you shouldn't be carrying it in your condition." He emphasized the last word, and she saw his fists clench and the skin on his knuckles turn white.
"You don't have to help me," Amelie said, her pride getting the better of her. "Go ahead, I saw you were in a hurry a moment ago!" She almost shouted in anger
. "I'm sorry about that." He bowed his head, not wanting to look her in the eye. "I didn't want to, but you surprised me." He quickly raised his head, looking at her with his big eyes, and she felt himself melting in them. "You surprised me a lot." "
I'm sorry, Wiktor, let's not hurt each other. If you came here to help me carry this to the car, please, I'd be happy to help, but I really don't want to talk to you anymore today, please..." she said in a pleading voice.
"Yes, I'll take it now, is there still much?"
"A few boxes, three, I think
." "What's going on here?" Konrad asked, surprised, approaching them and greeting Amelia.
"I told you something and I would ask you to follow my orders." Wiktor said sharply to Konrad, after which he said goodbye to Amelia and left.
"What did you tell him?"
"It's none of your business," he said, gathering his things from the bench and walking towards the exit.
"If it's not mine!" she shouted, and he stopped and looked at her with those sad eyes. "He's my friend, you can't treat him like that. It doesn't matter that you're his superior at work, after all, he's your longtime friend, what are you even doing?"
-You shouldn't care.
-But I do, so please explain to me what you told him. It was on Monday, right? Then what did you tell him to come to the office?
-Yes!
-What did you tell him?
"Don't let him come near you or I'll throw him out of Kanakis," he said harshly and left the building and into the parking lot. She couldn't believe what she heard. He even threatened to keep her away from men he thought were interested in her. He couldn't interfere in her life, after all. She ran after him, upset. He was already waiting for her in front of her car, and the irritation was visible on his face. She opened the car and watched as he put boxes in the trunk.
"How could you do that?" Silence. "You won't even answer me, you coward, you can't even play fair, you're just taking advantage of your position, as if you were a politician," she screamed and tried to continue talking, but he grabbed her wrists and shouted, "Is he the father of this child?" If so, I'll murder him. Amelia was genuinely scared when she saw him. As the vein in his temple throbbed
, "Stop it, let me go.
" "Who is this child?
" "That shouldn't concern you..."
"Who!
" "Daniel...
" "Daniel?" He released her, and she nearly fell to the ground. "Impossible, my brother." "Stay here, I'm going to get the rest of the boxes. It's good you're leaving the company," he said as he left, and headed toward the entrance. She couldn't cry; she had no tears left. She didn't know what to do. She waited impatiently for him to return with her boxes. She wanted to be home and never see him again. He came after about five minutes and put the boxes in the trunk.
"Go, congratulate my brother on his offspring," he said sourly. "Go, what are you waiting for?" he urged her, so she drove off...
Part 47
The days passed quickly; she didn't go to the company again, not after the way Wiktor had treated her during their last meeting. It still hurt a lot. She hadn't told Daniel about the incident, but she desperately wanted to talk to someone about it. She spent entire days at home. She couldn't get herself together for work, couldn't plan, couldn't even bring herself to clean the house. All those moments she spent idly waiting for the weekend, which would free her from the speculation about what the next six months would be like. Just recently, she had promised herself she would get her act together, but making promises was easy, but putting them into practice was much harder.
It was Saturday, quite early. Amelia was lying in bed, as she often did lately, thinking. At times, she didn't even know what she was thinking about; she simply made plans that she quickly forgot. In half an hour, she had to get ready and hit the road. She didn't really feel like it. Without a destination, she'd slept until ten or eleven in the last few days, and at that moment, the world was still gray. She got up anyway, opened the large window, and inhaled the cleanest air she'd encountered all day. There wasn't a single car in sight on the street, so there were no exhaust fumes mixed in. A moment of pleasure, and then, quietly, so as not to wake Daniel, she slipped into the bathroom. The shower refreshed her somewhat. She wrote a letter to Daniel to explain that she had already left and to tell him not to worry about her. He would certainly be around for a long time. He slept, after all, it was early Saturday morning. Everyone wants to rest on this day after a hard week. She packed her luggage and hit the road. The ride was good. The entire way, she listened to a CD of Anna Jantar's songs. She loved those songs; the newer ones didn't appeal to her at all, well, maybe some, but that was rare. She hoped she'd be there sooner than her beloved brother. Then she could hide in a corner and not come out for the next two days. That way, she wouldn't see him during that time, and maybe it wouldn't be so bad. When she pulled up to her grandmother's house, she knew that wouldn't be the case. Wiktor's car was standing proudly in the square. She parked next to it and, loaded with luggage, went inside the cottage. A neighbor she'd met earlier was bustling around in the kitchen and was preparing some delicacies. Amelia hadn't eaten breakfast, and for all that, The smells that reached her made her stomach clench. She greeted her cautiously, seeing that she was being watched by Wiktor.
"Good morning," she greeted him differently, but much more formally than she had greeted the woman a moment ago.
"Good morning," he said with a scowl, and after a moment's thought, he added, "I've hired Mrs. Grazynka to clean the house and prepare our food. This way, she'll be 100% sure we're here and won't have to run back and forth several times a day. Do you mind?" But as if not waiting for an answer, he continued, "Mrs. Grazynka has prepared a room for you upstairs, opposite mine. Does that bother you?" "
No, why should it bother me?" she asked, but she was perfectly aware of the effect the mere fact that he was so close to her would have on her.
"Well, I'm not sure about that, but if you say so..." he said, and entered the other room, where she had no idea what was in it, as she was still getting lost in the rooms. She sat down on a chair in the kitchen and watched Mrs. Grazynka, as Wiktor called her, work.
"Oh, I'm sorry," she said, turning to face her. "You probably don't know which room I prepared for you. Come, I'll take you there
." "Thank you, but of course I don't know where it is. I'm not very familiar with all these rooms. I've only been here once, and very briefly." The woman nodded in understanding and led her. They first walked through several rooms, but her brother was nowhere to be seen. All the rooms were well-kept and sparkling clean, setting an example. Amelia hadn't put much effort into making sure her house, which was truly impressive, was also kept in order. All the rooms were decorated with taste and elegance. If Grandma had done all this herself, more than one interior designer would have envied her talent. When they arrived, it turned out that there were plenty of rooms upstairs as well. Amelia wondered which room Wiktor would be staying in. But she immediately scolded herself for that thought.
"Please put your luggage here," the woman said, opening the door. "If you'd like to look around, please do. I'll show you around the rest of the house, because you'll have to find your way around here somehow." "
Thank you, but please call me by my name." She offered her her hand. "My name is Amelia
." "Grażyna." They shook hands, and Amelia just looked at the room again; it was stunning. The name "room" or "little room" didn't seem appropriate. Seeing it, she immediately remembered fairy tales about kidnapped princesses who slept on thousands of colorful pillows...
