To live or not...??
She lay in the hospital, barely alive. Doctors gave her a slim chance of survival. It was the tiny amount Monika had overdosed on that caused her... Her "parents," whom she hated with all her heart, were now sitting with her. This hatred had fueled all the sick actions she'd been trying to get attention for... And everything had started to go wrong when she met Asia...
It was already her tenth day at home alone. Left alone, she waited for her mother and stepfather, who were just about to return from their honeymoon. She wasn't happy about it. She absolutely hated her mother's new husband. However, she put on a brave face. She wanted to let go, to start thinking about her final exams. She promised herself she'd improve her grades this year and do very well. The doorbell roused her from her reverie. She saw her smiling mother and her husband. She greeted them with a fake smile. Finally, she locked herself in her room and began to cry. It dawned on her how much she missed her parents. Ever since her mother met Mariusz, she had completely lost touch with her.
The first day of school had begun. Monika felt she was entering adulthood. She would just pass her final exams and then move out and start college. A new girl, Asia, had joined their class. She seemed very nice. Monika immediately started talking to her. After the school year started, they went for a walk around town. They walked for a long time, but they still didn't want to go home because they had such a pleasant conversation. They felt they could become best friends, even close friends.
"Monika, let's just have a beer and we'll smoke right away," Asia finally said.
"No thanks. I don't drink or smoke," she replied, a little outraged by the idea.
"Stop it, Monika! We're almost adults!" Seeing Monika's uncertain expression, she added, "Have you never smoked or drank at all?
" "I only drank at my dad's name day." And smoking is probably not…" She felt herself blushing, but she didn't want to lie to her.
"Come on. There has to be a first time!" she said with a smile and tugged on her sleeve.
They bought themselves two beers each and half a liter. They sat down in a discreet spot under a tree by the river. They drank, smoked, and chatted about everything. After just one beer, Monika started feeling dizzy, but she bravely endured it and said nothing. When it got a little dark, she jumped up and wanted to run, but she couldn't. She started walking slowly home.
Monika arrived home at midnight. Her mother, furious when she saw her, immediately jumped on her and embraced her.
"Girl, what were you doing! Where have you been?!
" "I was out with Asia, the new girl in our class, and we were hanging out," she said calmly, but with guilt for not telling the whole truth.
"Don't lie! Mariusz saw you drinking and smoking. And on the way back, you were staggering! And he was right, because you stink like an ashtray and reek of alcohol! Did you drink vodka?"
Monika didn't comment. Her mother was still furious with her and grounded her for the next month. No going out after school and no TV. Just studying. But luckily, they didn't cut off the internet. Besides, her mother needed it for work, too.
The next day, Monika was at school and told Asia everything. However, Asia wasn't too concerned. She didn't try to comfort Monika, who was confused. She offered her weed, and she agreed. She knew the consequences of smoking at school and that her parents would be called in, but at least they would start caring about her again...
Monika began to become addicted. Each day without weed became a wasted day. Her mother began to worry and get upset because she was being called to school more and more often. Once for being drunk, but more often for being on drugs. She tried to talk to her, but after 10 minutes, it ended in an argument and grounding. They didn't know what to do with her.
The day before Christmas, Monika didn't come home that night. Her mother and stepfather, Mariusz, were exhausted, but they called all of Monika's friends anyway, but to no avail. Suddenly, it dawned on them. They called Asia, whom Monika had started hanging out with since the beginning of the year. They learned that she had also run away. The four of the girls' parents met and went to the police to report their daughters missing. At the police station, they took the report.
"Ladies and gentlemen, in recent years, more and more teenagers have been running away. The most common reasons for running away are lack of money or feeling unwanted at home, unloved by their parents. Do you know what could have caused your daughters to run away?
" "No, probably not... Although...?" Maybe she felt unwanted. – Monika's mother said, wondering. – Ever since I met Mariusz, I started spending less time with her…
– And this isn't the first time this has happened to my daughter. I don't know what to do anymore… – Asia's mother announced sadly.
– Don't worry. We'll try to find them.
After talking to the police, everyone went their separate ways and sat at home waiting for a miracle.
After a whole week, the police brought Monika home drunk. Her mother and Mariusz started crying with joy that she had been found. When the girl woke up, she saw her mother sitting next to her.
– Monika, I'm waiting for an explanation.
– What do you care? I'm an adult now, so don't interfere in my life. I don't matter to you anyway. You'd better go to your beloved Mariusz…
"Stop it! You know you're just as important to me as he is. If you don't want to talk, maybe a psychologist can help... Because we don't have the energy for you anymore...
" "You can't raise your own daughter!" And at that moment, she slapped her in the face. "What, can't you do anything else than abuse me mentally and physically?"
She left silently. That same evening, she called the psychologist.
A week later, Monika and her mother went to the psychologist. At first, he tried to talk to the girl, but talking didn't help. The mother began sobbing, convincing herself that she couldn't raise her own child. They made further appointments, but they didn't produce the desired effect. No one knew how to help Monika. Everyone wanted her well, even the school principal.
By the first week of vacation, her nerves had already snapped. She didn't want anyone to feel sorry for her, for her, for not being able to cope with her own problems. She called Aśka and asked her to get her some medication that would work immediately. She had no strength left to live. Asia arrived in the blink of an eye. She offered her a large amount of amphetamines, hoping they would help. However, she quickly disappeared and left Monika alone with her problems. The girl injected herself with amphetamines, but it wasn't enough. She wanted more and more. However, at one point, she felt dizzy and fainted.
Late that evening, Mariusz returned home. Suddenly, he saw Monika lying on the floor and was terrified. First, he calmly leaned over the girl and checked for a pulse. He couldn't feel one. He quickly called an ambulance. The ambulance arrived only after 10 minutes.
"Sir, the girl has taken too many drugs... It's a miracle she's still alive, but unfortunately, I'm afraid she won't live long," the doctor said. "But while there's hope, we have to save her..."
Mariusz only nodded slightly. At the hospital, Monika was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. While the girl was still unconscious, Mariusz called his wife and informed her of what had happened. She arrived as quickly as possible. She wanted to speak to a doctor as soon as possible.
"Madam, please calm down. Monika overdosed on drugs. It's unclear if she'll even survive... There's nothing we can do now. Her life is now in God's hands..."
