Death under scrutiny

The first researcher who dared to scientifically prove the existence of "life after life" was Karlis Osis (1917-97) from New York.

He was one of the first psychologists to earn a doctorate, researching such "unscientific" phenomena as ESP, or extrasensory perception. He later also studied ghosts and poltergeists, among other things.

He began researching what happens to people after death in the late 1950s. He sent questionnaires to five thousand doctors and a similar number of nurses. He amassed a large "collection" of cases and based on them, established a pattern of events. First, there was a sudden improvement in the dying patients' mood, then visions of messengers from another world and incredibly beautiful places appeared. Osis concluded that these experiences could not be explained by the influence of drugs or the disease itself. He called this phenomenon NDE (Near Death Experience).
