New influences

During this period, the very nature of religion shifted from one of conformity to the world to one of apocalyptic promise. This new phase was a direct result of the threats white people presented to their communities. Suddenly, politics and fear took on a new significance. In 1680, a Pueblo Indian named Popé used his mysticism to lead a revolution against the Spanish after missionaries threatened their faith. Many such mystics arose, such as Prophet Tenskwatawa of the Shawnee tribe. For many years, he lived in his brother's shadow and abused alcohol. In 1805, he had a dream in which he walked a path traveled by spirits after death. He became charismatic, in the classic guru style, and preached a moral system of reclamation of ancient ways.
