Contemporary Spiritism is based on the thesis that the universe is neither a static nor a created environment, but is both, and is constantly evolving and changing. The fundamental belief of contemporary Spiritism is that the purpose of the universe is to foster the evolution of spirit, through the mechanism of evolution of life in all its forms within the universe.
This fundamental belief forms the basis for three principles that are the foundation of modern Spiritism:
All things exist, but forms of energy, and all energy, constantly change form. Spirit is a form of energy that evolves as a consequence of the development of life and mind. Your soul is part of the larger pool of all the souls of all living things.
The purpose of life is the development of the soul, both your own and the souls of all other living beings. All life, soul, and energy are interwoven.
There are countless paths through life, and you are responsible because you choose your own path, the decisions you make, and the consequences you accept. Happiness and spiritual growth will be achieved when you follow your chosen path, while unhappiness and spiritual stagnation will be achieved when you stray or allow others to manipulate you. Your soul is constantly growing throughout your existence and continues to grow throughout many lifetimes.
Life exists as a foundation for the development of the spirit. To understand this belief, you must first understand the ladder of evolution defined by modern spiritualism:
Energy => Inorganic Matter => Organic Matter => Life => Mind => Spirit
All the matter we eat, the food we return to Earth, and the air we breathe were initially created when gravity and the fusion of nuclear nuclei in thermonuclear reactions in stellar furnaces and supernovae fused the elements hydrogen and helium into complex, heavy molecules. Heavier elements like silicon, carbon, and iron also contributed to Earth's formation.
Our planet was created by the same forces of stellar evolution that once gave rise to the Sun. Originally devoid of life, Earth was composed of inorganic elements; organic mixtures and molecules formed over billions of years. These organic molecules were the precursors of life and eventually coalesced to form simple, single cells, and this process of organic evolution gave rise to the life that exists today.
As the web of life expanded, it contributed to the diversity of living organisms. With life came the development of the brain and mind. As more complex animals, such as mammals, developed, the brain also evolved to meet the more complex needs of these animals, particularly primates, which evolved to survive in a rapidly changing environment. As the brain expanded and its volume increased, it created a complex social structure among primates, ultimately leading, with the evolution of Homo sapiens, to shape the world we live in today.
Spirit is a consequence of the development of mind. Just as life has developed and expanded over the centuries, so too has spirit—the spiritual and immortal part of humanity and all living things. Your spirit (or soul) is part of the life continuum of your species, in our case, the human species. You, as well as part of the larger community, represent all people. Each new life is an incarnation of spirit—when the body dies, your spirit continues to live and mature through the experiences you gain and the decisions you make in your life.
The reason for your existence is to perfect your spirit. The decisions you make and the actions you take in your life, for better or worse, will shape and grow your spirit.
Your soul (or spirit) is a part of you and represents your spiritual nature. It is what guides you through life, the small voice or primal instinct that tells you what direction you should take or what decision you should make. When your mind and body are in alignment with your spirit, you will know it through the feeling of happiness and contentment you have achieved, because it will be following the path that is right for you. Similarly, when you are sick, unhappy, and dissatisfied, this time will reveal whether you are truly listening to your soul and conscience (the connection between your soul and mind).
Every path in life is different. When we allow ourselves to be manipulated along a path chosen by others (our parents, peers, church, or society) instead of the path that's right for us, we become unhappy and restless. Look within to determine if you're following the right path—not the one dictated by others.
