CHAPTER 22 – Meeting in the Underground
Zofia felt the ground beneath her give way. Suddenly, she found herself in a tunnel beneath the city, as wide and tall as a cathedral. The walls pulsed with a bright, warm light that seemed to vibrate with her heart. The air was thick, smelling of damp and something else—something metallic, as if old coins and rust mingled in a single aroma.
A figure emerged from around the bend. It wasn't tall, but it moved with a confidence that made Zofia involuntarily take a step back. "Who's there?" she asked, though her voice trembled.
"Easy, Zofia," said a voice that sounded familiar. "We've been waiting for you." A group of people emerged from the darkness, all in similar, simple clothing, their eyes filled with determination. One of them—a tall man with silver hair—stepped forward. "I am Elijah. What you see here will change everything you believed in."
Zofia felt a shiver of emotion and fear at once. "Why did you bring me here?" she asked, trying to control the tremor in her voice.
"Because the time has come. The surface city knows no truth, but we must act underground," Elijah replied, leading her deeper into the tunnel. The light pulsed stronger, and the walls began to reveal symbols and inscriptions that seemed to tell a story from centuries past.
"This... this is impossible..." Zofia whispered, touching one of the engraved markings. "How is it possible that no one knew about this?"
"Because the truth always hides where no one is looking," Elijah said solemnly. "And now you must decide which side you will take. The underground has its rules, and those rules can save or destroy everything you know."
The light around them suddenly dimmed for a moment, leaving Zofia in semi-darkness. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness, she saw a vast hall before her, filled with people and equipment, as if the underground were a living organism, pulsating with its own rhythm.
"Welcome to the heart of the underground, Zofia," someone said from behind her. "This is where the real battle begins."
Zofia took a deep breath. She knew that from this moment on, nothing would be the same.

Zofia slowly moved deeper into the hall, her every step echoing in the stone corridor. The people around her were busy with what seemed like preparations for some grand undertaking—some were studying maps, others meticulously arranging devices Zofia couldn't identify.
"All this... for what?" she asked quietly, directing the question at Elijah.
"Defense and survival," he replied calmly. "The city above ground sleeps, unaware of the threats already surrounding it. We must act before it's too late."
Suddenly, a crack broke the silence. A small figure emerged from the darkness – a child, perhaps ten years old, eyes full of curiosity and courage. "They came to find you," it said in a surprisingly mature voice. "They knew you would come."
Zofia felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "Who are they?" she asked, though she felt she knew the answer.
"Those who don't want the truth to be revealed," Elijah replied. "And we must stop them before they destroy everything we love."
The light in the hall suddenly dimmed, and the tunnel filled with shadow. Zofia felt her heart beat faster. In the distance, she saw movement – figures that seemed to be waiting in hiding, watching her every step.
"Don't be afraid," Elijah whispered, placing his hand on her shoulder. "Everything you've learned has prepared you for this moment. Now you must choose—become part of the underground, or return to a life that no longer exists."
Zofia looked at the people around her—strangers who had trusted her from the first moment—and felt a strange yet powerful connection. She knew her decision would change not only her life, but the fate of the entire city.
"I'm staying," she finally said, her voice firm, though she still felt fear inside. "I'll help you."
Elijah smiled faintly, a hint of relief filling his eyes. "Good. Then you must now learn the secrets of the underground. It all begins here."
At that moment, the light faded completely, and Zofia felt the ground tremble beneath her feet. The sound was like a heart beating to the rhythm of the underground world.
"Can you feel it?" – whispered someone from behind her. “This underground is alive. And we are its guardians.”
Zofia closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath. She knew that from now on, her life would be inextricably linked to this mysterious, pulsating world beneath the city. And that no decision would be easy.
