## Chapter 14: Confrontation

The light in the library reflected off the crystal lamps, casting shadows on the walls. The man, who had removed his hood, stood still, his eyes gleaming with an icy stare. A knife glinted in his hand, but this time Jerzy was prepared.

"That's it," the detective said calmly. "Did you think no one would find out? Now you'll pay for your actions."

The man took a step forward, and Kaja and Maria backed away from Piotr. Helena grabbed the nearest book, ready to defend herself.

"I always knew you'd come back," Jerzy continued, "but this time we won't give you a chance to escape."

Suddenly, there was a crash, and the man made a sudden movement toward the door. Jerzy quickly moved to the center of the library, blocking the exit. Piotr, though still terrified, moved closer to aid the detective.

“Everything you’ve done comes back to you,” Jerzy said, his tone implacable.

The man hesitated. His gaze darted between the gathered people, and the air was heavy with tension that could explode at any moment.

At that moment, Kaja scanned the shelves and noticed that one of the books had been moved. She pushed it open suddenly—and behind it, a small, hidden compartment opened. The man froze, surprised by the discovery.

“Is this your trap?” he whispered, backing away slowly.

Jerzy nodded, his eyes still focused on the intruder.

“Yes, and that’s it. No one gets out of here alive if they try to hurt anyone again.”

The man hesitated, then slowly lowered the knife to the floor. Piotr moved to secure it, and Jerzy made sure the escape route was blocked. The tension in the library slowly began to ease, and the guests felt their first sigh of relief in hours.

"Now everything will be explained," Jerzy said, "and everyone will face the consequences of their actions."

Kaja looked at Piotr, a mixture of fear and relief evident in her eyes. Maria put her arm around her, and Helena still held the book, though no longer ready for battle. The night filled with shadows slowly gave way to the first signs of dawn, and the truth, though painful, finally emerged.
