Haunted places in England

England has many places that attract lovers of history and the paranormal. From the mysterious ghost of Anne Boleyn, who regularly haunts the Tower of London and Hampton Court, to the Blue Man at Arundel Castle, each location has its own unique story. At Sanford Orcas, a beautiful Tudor manor house, you can encounter as many as fourteen different ghosts, including the seductive Lady of Red Silk. These stories are not only fascinating but also connect with England's rich history, full of dramatic events and legendary figures.

Anne Boleyn

The ghost of Anne Boleyn appears frequently not only in the Tower of London, but also at Hampton Court.

Anne Boleyn was Henry VIII's second wife. The king, who had previously married Catherine of Aragon, sought but failed to obtain her consent. He then reformed the church in his country and became its leader himself, a clear challenge to the papal authority.

After obtaining a divorce and marrying Anne, the king dreamed above all of having a son. His first wife had only given him a daughter (Princess Mary). On September 7, 1533, Anne Boleyn also gave birth to a girl, Elizabeth (who would later reign as Queen Elizabeth I). Relations between Henry and Anne Boleyn deteriorated; the king began courting Jane Seymour. Nevertheless, Anne became pregnant, and the couple briefly reconciled; one child was stillborn.

Henry decided to get rid of Anne. Falsely accused of treason, she was arrested, imprisoned in the Tower of London, and sentenced to death.

The execution was scheduled for May 19, 1536, but it took place the day after, when a suitably skilled executioner arrived from Calais. The apparition appears on the anniversary of her death. Her spirit, dressed in magnificent robes, walks the fortress walls on cold, dark nights, holding her own head under her arm. Several people have seen Anne's ghost in the corridors of Blickling Hall—her childhood home, although the current building was built about a century after her death, but stands on the same site as the previous structure.

Location - Arundel Castle (Sussex)

Blue husband

A specter known as the Blue Man appears at 12th-century Arundel Castle in Sussex, England. It seems he is the ghost of some elegant gentleman from bygone ages, as he is dressed in a magnificent blue silk suit.

The Blue Man is most often seen walking sedately through the castle library.

Legend has it that in Aroundel, the ancient seat of the Dukes of Norfolk, three other specters appear - a kitchen boy murdered two hundred years ago, a beautiful girl dressed all in white who committed suicide by jumping from the castle tower, and a mysterious white bird that appears in the area when one of the Dukes' family is about to die.

Location - Sunford Orcas (Dorset)

Sanford Orcas Manor

The magnificent Tudor manor house, located in the peaceful village of Sanford Orcas near Sherborne, Dorset, is haunted by fourteen different ghosts. Among them are two women: one dressed head to toe in green, the other seductive and always appearing just before midnight in an outfit that earned her the nickname "Lady in Red Silk." There are also sightings of a black dog, a monk, and the specter of Hubert Medlycott, one of the previous owners, who committed suicide in the gatekeeper's cottage. Further details about Sanford Orcas can be found in Peter Underwood's book "Gazzetter of British Ghosts" (1971).
