Scientist debunks evidence of ghosts' existence

Scientist Dr. Bryan Farha, a professor of behavioral sciences, challenges theories about the existence of ghosts, pointing to the lack of scientific evidence supporting paranormal phenomena. In the interview, he emphasizes that a century and a half of research in this field has yielded inconclusive results, and the evidence presented by ghost researchers is weak from a scientific perspective. Farha emphasizes that while people desire to believe in the afterlife, desire alone is not sufficient proof. He points to the need for a critical approach to supernatural phenomena, especially in the context of cultural traditions such as Halloween.

Dr. Bryan Farha: Is the world partially inhabited by the dead who enjoy frightening the living by slamming doors open or touching their faces while they sleep? Are there disembodied spirits who can torment, amuse, or protect real people?

One of the debunkers of this theory says that science does not support it.

"A century and a half of paranormal research has failed to provide sufficient evidence for the reality of such phenomena," said Dr. Bryan Farha, a professor of behavioral sciences and scientific and technical advisor to the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of the Paranormal, a major organization that investigates reports of supernatural phenomena.

"Ghost researchers provide evidence that is scientifically weak," Farha said. "For example, the use of measuring instruments and the taking of measurements are necessary for the study to be considered scientific."

"The equipment is not faulty," he added. It is used for measuring, but it is not designed to measure the presence of a spirit.

"The existence of a single ghost has never been confirmed. The reason for this is that sometimes the search is based on feelings or impressions. Feelings and impressions do not constitute scientific proof," Farha said. "Have fun this Halloween, but be critical of ghosts and haunted houses. I don't want to spoil the Halloween fun, but I believe that the claims of paranormal phenomena are unsubstantiated."

Why do people believe this?

"Alleged paranormal phenomena are considered, but only those related to death, such as ghosts, haunted houses, and the ability to communicate with the dead," Farha said. "All three suggest an afterlife, and that's a comforting thought. I understand why people like to believe in such things. However, just because we want an afterlife doesn't mean it actually exists. Even if we believed in it, where would researchers find the evidence?"

Farha said he doesn't oppose the existence of an afterlife. "Indeed, I could be inclined to believe it exists. However, I don't guarantee it will be scientifically proven. I don't think the universe was created by chance, so it's a possibility, but we won't know the truth until we die. We have to wait until the end of our lives to learn anything about the afterlife, about God, and about religion."
