England: Near-collision with UFO

London, England – A published investigative report by the UK Air Safety Board (UKAB) details the UFO sighting by an A320 pilot near Heathrow Airport in July 2013. The unidentified object appeared close enough to the aircraft that the pilot expected an immediate collision and turned to the co-pilot.

The Airprox report states that near-mid-air collision number 2013086 occurred on the evening of July 19, 2013, at 6:35 PM, 20 kilometers east of Heathrow Airport over Berkshire. While the co-pilot was busy with his checklist, the captain (who is not identified by name in the report) spotted an object approaching from the east through the left window. Its altitude was aligned with the A320's. Given its speed, the pilot expected a collision to be imminent and instinctively turned to his co-pilot.

When the expected collision did not occur, the pilot asked his colleague, "Did you see that?", who replied, "I saw something?" At the same time, the captain spotted an object flying away just a few meters above the plane.

The pilot's report described the object as "cigar- or rugby-ball-shaped, light silver, metallic." The investigation did not confirm any radar movements near the A320.

After a thorough analysis of the case, which took into account other aircraft or weather balloons, it was concluded that it was impossible to explain the case even if it was assumed that it was just an optical illusion caused by the light and the rapid movement of the pilot's head.

Airprox classified the accident risk level as "D." Of the 16 reports of aircraft collisions over British skies in 2013, only one was recorded in this class (classes A to E).
