Ghost from the Internet?

Can ghosts haunt people online? Melyssa Glennie-Puckett, the author, shares her personal experience, which led her to question the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds. After reading the harrowing story of a researcher's tragic fate, she began to experience unsettling phenomena in her surroundings, such as flickering lamps and the strange behavior of a cat. She wonders whether strong emotions and thoughts can attract ghosts, and her experiences prompt reflection on the power of the human mind.

Monitor with a skullCan you believe a ghost can visit someone online? If someone had asked me this question before January 2006, I probably would have smiled sheepishly and replied, "That's impossible." What happened to make me experience a ghost created by thought, not necessarily haunting a computer? Well, the resource at my fingertips was the internet. I've always been a believer in the existence of the paranormal, even though I'd never experienced one myself. I love wandering the internet and browsing the plethora of paranormal websites, delving into chilling stories of eerie experiences. This cold winter day, however, was different from any other, except for the fact that I was browsing websites devoted to ghost towns and abandoned places. I stumbled upon a website from The Bureau of Land Management, which lists statistics on abandoned homes and reminds researchers to take care of their own safety. There is also a section dedicated to the unfortunate souls who ignored the warnings posted at the entrances to dangerous places.
There were several stories that particularly shocked me, but the one that truly terrified me was the story of a man who fell to the bottom of an eight-story shaft. When his body was found some time later, the medical examiner concluded that he had likely survived the fall, breaking only his leg. What killed him was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. This man was a well-prepared explorer who had packed a wealth of survival equipment, including a pistol. I began to imagine, vividly, the man lying at the bottom of the shaft, in complete darkness... in utter agony. His pain, both emotional and physical, must have been unbearable. As the hours passed, his anxiety intensified, and he realized he was too far away to be found. There was no chance of rescue. He began to think about his family and his life. I could imagine a man utterly devastated and saddened, knowing there was only one way to end his suffering. I felt such sadness and wondered what I would do.
I was immersed in these feelings of fear and hopelessness for a time, so much so that I experienced a terrible sensation in my body. Although I was shocked and moved by this tragic story, I had passed into another place. Just then, the desk lamp began to flicker and buzz as if a sudden electrical surge had occurred. I concluded that the light bulb was loose, so I checked it and discovered it was no accident. Then my stomach dropped to my knees, and I felt the presence of someone or something near me. I sat up and stood up again, wanting to warn my "visitor" that I was aware of what was happening. The lamp flickered again. I ignored it. A short time later, I entered the bathroom, and the light bulb on the ceiling began to flicker, just like the lamp. At that moment, I panicked and ran away.

Over the next few days, even stranger electrical phenomena occurred. I was cooking something on the stove when the oven timer suddenly went off, which really scared me! That same day, the bathroom light started flickering again, and this time I was already sitting up. Annoyed (and oblivious), I shouted, "Are you stalking me? I'm trying to use the bathroom!!" Then the flickering stopped. My cat was also acting strangely; his eyes seemed to be following something or someone who wasn't there. Another time, he woke up, jumping and screaming, focusing all his attention on one small, blinking object. Finally, I fumigated my entire house, and then the mysterious activity suddenly stopped. Did my strong feelings and thoughts about this person attract his spirit to me? Or perhaps some other random entity I read about online that day? Who knows. I firmly believe that the human mind is more powerful than we imagine, and that there may be receivers of its power on the other side.

So I ask you: Do you believe that a ghost can visit someone via the internet? I do.
