Cover of the Krapkowicki CourierIt all started with a photo taken by a group of young people on the so-called Tempelberg (literally, "Templar Hill") near Obrowiec. Although the photo was taken with a cell phone, the outline of a luminous figure is clearly visible. The photo was taken on July 13th, at precisely 11:00 AM.
"That day, six of us went to Tempelberg because a friend from Germany was visiting, wanted to see the place, and he couldn't believe it even existed. It was my first time there, too. My sister and I walked behind and took pictures with our phones. Later, when we were looking through the photos at home, we realized that one of them showed a strange, illuminated figure. At first, we thought the sun might have illuminated someone, but there was no one there at the time," says 13-year-old Nikola Fait, the photographer. The photo caused a stir in Obrowiec. Almost the entire town now knows it.
Some people thought it was a photomontage, but many residents believe that the photo is real and it is not a joke on our part - adds 16-year-old Krzysiek Kopiec.
The photo made an impression on us, too. It shows three people walking single file. A luminous figure clearly stands out between the two boys.
Skeptical, we arranged with a group of young people from Obrowiec to show us the spot where the photo was taken. On Wednesday, August 3rd, we were going to Obrowiec. Krzysztof Kopiec, 16, Piotr Woźniak, 18, and Sabrina Machura were waiting for us at the local fire station. Together with the young residents, we reached Tempelberg. Tempelberg is surrounded by trees, old oaks, and hornbeams. First, we climbed a rampart of sorts, then descended to a section of a dried-up (filled?) moat. We found ourselves, as it were, inside a closed circle. To reach the center of the circle, another climb awaited us. Soon, we reached the spot where a Templar stronghold supposedly stood centuries ago. According to old chronicles, this is where the Templars established their defensive headquarters at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.
We take photos with digital cameras. Even in one of the first photos, we see strange, bright dots. We attribute this to raindrops falling from trees, but each of us has been taking photos digitally for several years now and has never captured such unique drops on camera.
There are several legends and stories associated with Tempelberg that can make your hair stand on end. One of the legends was told to us by Jerzy Lipka, an expert in local folklore.
"Once, the only church nearby was the monastery on Święta Anna Street, and before Easter, one of the fathers would travel across the Oder River, to the area around Żużele, Brożec, and Straduń. He would preach and administer Communion. When he returned, the Templars attacked him and stole his monstrance and chalice. Father cursed the place where the robbery took place, and the stronghold was about to collapse," recounts Jerzy Lipka. And indeed, nothing remains of the Templar headquarters except a mound, an old moat, and... a mystery. Many local residents are convinced that strange things happen there. Several of our interlocutors told us about their adventures in Tempelberg.
About 30 years ago, I went fishing with a friend on the Oder River. It was early spring. We were sitting by the river and suddenly we saw a group of children playing around a bonfire on Tempelberg. We wondered who was leading the children to this place that people were talking about... So we decided to get closer and see who these little ones were and who was taking care of them. We were about 100 meters from the bonfire. When we were 50 meters from the children, trees obscured them, and when we arrived there, there were no children, nor even any trace of the bonfire," said Mr. Skórka, who has lived in Obrowiec his entire life. A similar situation reportedly happened to a tractor driver. "When we saw that photo, we went to Tempelberg and wanted to dig in the same spot where the strange figure appeared. We had the photo with us, we knew exactly where Nikola had taken the photo, but we couldn't determine where the figure was standing." Everything looked different, even the arrangement of trees didn't match, says Damian Skórka. So are there ghosts on Tempelberg? Is the place haunted?
