Most of my students who are members of traditional religious congregations avoid mentioning the Tarot to their church groups for fear of reprisal and rejection. One of my most devoted students also holds a senior position in the church and has deep concerns that her members will discover her passion for the Tarot teachings. In short, she leads a "double" life, which is sad and frustrating for her. She must rely on her own intuition to guide her in keeping this matter a secret. How unfortunate that the Tarot has been deemed "sacrilegious" and thus relegated to the status of taboo! This Tarot student would like to share with her friends the Tarot's extraordinary insights into being human, especially as she enjoys these teachings in her later years. She simply wants to demonstrate how the Tarot attracts powerful messages that are transformative both collectively and individually—especially within her social group, which actively provides spiritual guidance and counseling.
Like this student, many tarot readers will need to exercise wise judgment about the potentially strange duality in their lives, deciding how much to share with others and with whom they can safely share their sincere interest in the Tarot. These same religious denunciators of the Tarot will also claim that its connection with the devil is proven by the fact that the Tarot is an occult science. Those who study the occult are not devil worshipers! Occult simply means that something is "hidden," yet the word itself has been steeped in negative and terrifying associations. How interesting that Western culture has interpreted something hidden as evil, terrifying, and taboo. The Tarot reveals what is hidden, undoubtedly unapologetically making it part of the occult tradition.
