Roman mythology

Roman mythology is a fascinating collection of deities, heroes, and figures that reflect the beliefs and values of ancient Rome. Among the most important gods are Jupiter, the supreme god of the sky, and Mars, the god of war, along with many others, such as Venus, the god of love, and Neptune, the god of the waters. The Romans also worshiped goddesses, including Juno, the patroness of marriage, and Ceres, the goddess of the harvest. This article explores the diversity of mythological figures, their attributes, and their significance in Roman culture, revealing their role in the daily lives and religious practices of ancient Romans.

Gods

Aeolus - god of the winds, son of Jupiter.

Aius Locutius - a deity who appeared only once, predicting the invasion of Rome by the Gauls in 390 BC. A temple was built in the place where his voice was heard.

Aquilon - god of the northeast wind.

Cupid - god of love, son of the goddess Venus and the god Mars. Auster - god of the south wind.

Aventine - son of Hercules and Rhea, god of the Aventine Hill.

Bacchus, Bacchus - god of the vine, wine and the fertile forces of nature.

Boreas - god of the north wind, son of Eos and Astraeus. Consus - originally the patron god of granaries and the deity of good counsel.

Deus Fascinus - Roman deity of witchcraft.

Dis, Dis Pater - god of the underworld and wealth.

Aeolus - god of winds and storms. The winds were subordinate to him:

- Aquilon - ruler (god) of the north wind,

- Eurus - ruler (god) of the east wind,

- Auster - ruler (god) of the south wind,

- Favonius - ruler (god) of the west wind.

Aesculapius - god of the medical art.

Faun - the ancient Italic god of fields and mountain forests, protector of shepherds, granting fertility to their flocks; depicted as a bearded man, identified with the Greek Pan
Fons, Fontus - son of Janus and Luturna, god of springs.

Genius - a deity personifying the strength and spiritual potency of a man.

Honos, Honor - a deity personifying honor and respect as a reward for bravery.

Janus – one of the oldest Italic deities, worshiped as the god of all beginnings, the god of doors and gates. His attributes include keys and a staff. The Kalends, or first day of the month, are dedicated to him.

Jupiter, Jupiter - the supreme god of the sky and light, weather and all natural phenomena, hence the nicknames:

- Fulgator - throwing lightning bolts,

- Pluvius - sending rain,

- Serenator - restoring the weather,

- Stator - supporting the ranks of fighting soldiers,

- Victor - victorious,

- Optimus - the best,

- Maximus - the greatest.

The Ides, i.e. the 13th and 15th days of the month, were dedicated to him.

Quirinus - a god of Sabellian origin, patron of the assembly of the Roman people.

Liber Pater - god of harvests.

Mars - god of war.

Mercury, Mercury - god of trade and profit. From the Latin word Merx - "merchandise".

Momus - god of jokes, mockery and ridicule.

Neptune - god of clouds, rain and waters.

Orcus - god of the world of the dead.

Picus - god of forests and prophecies, an excellent soothsayer.

Portunus - god, guardian of ports and harbors.
Priapus – originally worshipped on the Hellespont, this god of gardens and orchards was renowned for his licentiousness. His sacred animal was the donkey.

Saturn - god of agriculture and sowing, husband of the goddess Ops. From the Latin Sator - "Sower".

Silwanus, Silvanus - god of fields and forests, guardian of animals, flocks and vineyards.

Sol - a Sabine deity introduced into the pantheon of Roman gods and then identified with Helios.

Summanus - god of night lightning.

Tiberinus - god of the Tiber River.

Terminus - god of boundaries, identified with the boundary stone of fields.

Vertumnus - god of changes in nature, mainly in orchards.

Wolturnue - son of Janus, god of the Campanian river of the same name.

Vulcan - god of fire, fires and metallurgical crafts.

Virbius – a deity worshipped in Diana's grove in Aricia, identified with the Greek Hippolytus. Virbius's son, bearing the same name, fought with Turnus against Aeneas.
