The "pagan" figure in Christian art

The fascination with the Green Man became widespread during the Middle Ages. Interestingly, numerous sculptures of him adorned many churches and cathedrals built at the time. Chartres Cathedral in France has 70 depictions of the Green Man, and the Rosslyn Chapel near Edinburgh in Scotland has over 200. In the latter chapel, the Green Man's likeness can be found in prominent places, such as on the entrance door.

The Green Man also gazes from many houses along the roads leading to Gothic cathedrals. Contrary to appearances, these are not mascara figures, but rather figures expressing the joy of life. Michelangelo placed the Green Man's image on the tomb of Pope Julius II in Rome, and the figure was also used by copyists adorning the Bible.
