Mirka entered the hospital. From the very beginning, she was put off by the peculiar smell that always permeates sterile rooms. She lingered downstairs for a while to acclimate herself to the smell, then headed up to the second floor to Dr. Malwa's office.
"Good morning," she said. "
Hello, Mireczka! How are you feeling?" the doctor asked. "
Fine. But I've been better," Mirka replied with a smile.
Dr. Malwa personally escorted his patient to the room. He left her there alone and told her he'd come back later. Mirka sat down on her bed and decided to unpack. She took out a frame with a cyclist depicting her three best friends and herself. She placed the gift on the dresser and pulled out her personal belongings. A moment later, a young nurse in a freshly laundered white coat arrived. She asked Mirka to change into her pajamas. When she did as she was told, the nurse led her to her first tests. They took her blood, a urine sample, and a throat swab. After the tests were finished, Mirka returned to the room. A girl was sitting on the other bed, which had been unoccupied until then. She was quite pretty. She had long blond hair with neatly trimmed bangs. Her blue eyes were dark but cheerful. When Mirka entered the room, the girl stood up and smiled, revealing her braces. "
Hi." The girl approached Mirka and shook her hand. "My name is Paulina Kostecka."
"Hi." Mirka returned the hug. "Mirka Walicka."
Paulina sat back down on her bed. She pulled her bag out from under it and took out green pajamas with tiny white flowers.
"This isn't my first time in the hospital. That's why I know by heart all the stages I have to go through at the very beginning," Paulina said and laughed. "First, pajamas, tests, and boredom."
Mirka smiled at her new friend. Soon she was taken for her first checkup. Meanwhile, the girl was texting her friends, informing them about her health and asking them to come over after class. Agnieszka replied that, of course, they would all come. After 20 minutes, Paulina returned to the classroom. The girls started talking. After an hour, they knew a lot about each other. Paulina lived in Komorowice Sosno, very close to Mirka's home. She had an older sister, Ania, and an older brother, Paweł. She liked to write poetry and read books. They shared this and even less useful information with each other. Mirka told Paulina about her family, class, and friends, and Paulina listened attentively, as if not wanting to miss a word she was saying. After lunch, Paulina's parents came and took their daughter down to the cafeteria on the ground floor. Mirka decided to take a nap. But she couldn't. Half of her class rushed into the classroom. Agnieszka, Gośka and Olka were, of course, the most visible of the group. They ran into the room and hugged Mirka as if they hadn't seen her in a year. Behind them came Alicja, Ela, Monika, Marta, Iza, Natalia, Piotrek, and Paweł. They handed Mirka a bouquet of yellow flowers, the names of which no one knew, and sat around her.
"So, what's up, old lady? How are you feeling?" Agnieszka asked.
"Fine. For a old lady," the girl replied.
They sat and talked. Friends told Mirka what was happening at school, and she listened, laughing at the funniest stories. After half an hour, Paulina entered the room.
"And this is Paulina, my companion in hospital misery," she introduced Mirka to her friends. "
Hi everyone," Paulina said.
"Hi," eleven voices chorused. "
I just came to get my phone. I won't disturb you."
Paulina took her phone out of the locker and left the room.
"Is she cool?" Olka asked.
"Very. She even lives near me. In Sosno.
" "And you've never seen her on the bus?" Gosia asked, surprised.
"How could she have seen her if she's always busy with Michał?" Agnieszka said.
"Ha, ha, ha. Very funny. I've never seen her on the bus because her dad takes her to school," Mirka replied. "
And where does she go to school?" Alicja asked. "
Until 11. To class with Majka Kowalska."
The friends stayed for a while, and then some of them left. Only Agnieszka, Ola, and Gosia remained.
"Michał called me. Yesterday and today," Aga said.
"And what did he want?" the girl asked.
"Well, he asked what was going on with you. He came to pick you up on Sunday, but you weren't there. That's when he called me for the first time. He called me again this morning, asking if you were at school."
-And what did you tell him?
"What was I supposed to tell him? I said I didn't know what was going on with you.
" "That's good."
"Why didn't you tell him you were going to the hospital?" Gośka asked.
"Well, you know how he is. He'd worry unnecessarily," Mirka replied. "
And now he's not worried? He doesn't know where you are or what's happening to you," Olka said.
"Well, you're right. But I'll get out of here in a few days and then I'll tell him everything," Mirka promised.
"Don't you want him to visit you?" Agnieszka asked. "
If I want, I'll call him."
The friends stayed for another hour and then left. After a while, Paulina returned.
"A friend of mine is coming to see me today too. But I don't think she'll bring that many people with her," the girl said, smiling at Mirka. "
Sorry if it bothers you. Next time, I'll tell them not to bring a whole bunch of them here," Mirka said.
"Oh, I don't mind! God forbid.
" "That's good."
Mirka decided to take a nap now. After 15 minutes, she fell asleep. She woke up when a friend came over to her neighbor's house. She opened her eyes and was very surprised. Michał's cousin, Marta, was sitting on Paulina's bed. He had once taken Mirka to his cousin's when she had nothing to do.
"Marta?!!" Mirka shouted.
"Mira?! What are you doing here?" the girl said in surprise at the sight of her cousin's friend. "Well, what can you do in the hospital? I'm going crazy
here. " "Wait a minute, you two know each other?" Paulina asked. "She's Michał's friend. You know, the one he told us so much about," Marta explained. "Aha! I didn't realize it could be her. I knew it was some Mirka from Komorowice. But somehow it didn't occur to me that it was my friend from the next bed," Paulina recalled. "Does Michał know you're here?" Marta asked. "Uh... yes. Of course he does," Mirka lied. "He's my friend." "And he's not here yet? I don't believe it," Marta said. "You know what, girls? I'm going down to the café for something to drink, and you two stay here." Mirka announced, putting on a robe, slipping on her slippers, and leaving the room. She headed for the elevator. It hadn't been there for a while, so she decided to take the stairs. Between the first and ground floors, she felt faint. Black spots began to appear before her eyes. She fainted. She woke up in her room, on an IV drip. Doctor Malwa, a nurse, and Paulina stood next to the bed. "Well, Mircia, you're finally awake," the doctor said. "You gave us quite a scare." "I'm sorry. I didn't plan on fainting," Mirka said, smiling. "You're smiling, so it's good. You'll have an IV drip all night long," the doctor announced.
"Is that necessary?" the girl asked.
"Your body is very weak. Unfortunately," the doctor said, patting Mirka's head.
"I'll be visiting you girls. Be good."
The nurse and doctor left. Paulina sat on Mirka's bed.
"Well, not bad, not bad. First day in the hospital and you already have an admirer," she said, laughing.
"What? Who do you mean?" Mirka asked.
"A guy found you. If I know correctly, his name is Robert. He called the doctor and tried to revive you himself," Paulina told her friend. "
And where is he now? I'd like to thank him," Mirka asked. "
I think he's in his room. Should I go get him?" "
If you could.
" "Okay, I'm going. And you be good here. Remember what the doctor said," Paulina said, winking at Mirka.
A moment later, she returned, leading a tall, young man with brown eyes and blond hair.
"This is your savior, Mireczka," Paulina said, smiling. "
Hi. I'm Mirka." The girl extended her hand to the boy. "
Nice to meet you. I'm Robert," the boy returned the hug. His hand was limp and delicate.
"Thank you for... well, everything. For finding me and calling the doctor," Mirka said.
