"Oooh... woof... woof..." he panted, satisfied. "I'll spare your life. You deserve it. You have to lick yourself with the taste," he joked, watching the large leech crawl into the mud. "Find a pacifier somewhere else to play with. Mine isn't for children," he said to her unconsciously until she disappeared into the swamp. He waved his hand as if bidding farewell to a loved one.
Are matched the commanded direction with the compass needle and moved on. He had killed eighteen leeches.
"I've received an additional eighteen hundred points," he counted mentally with undisguised satisfaction, checking the clock for his increased score. He smiled, pleased with himself and relaxed by his recent experience. "What happened when I lost consciousness?" he wondered aloud, trying to piece together the past moments. "It seems that the leeches, to facilitate their sucking, pulled me from the depths..."
He stopped, surprised by the strange sight. On the other side of the swamp, a familiar shape, covered in leeches, writhed in the mud. He decided to help the attacked figure. He approached and saw that the victim was a woman in a silvery jumpsuit. The number five was emblazoned on her air tank. He began tearing the leeches from her clothing. The large worms were even sucking on her intimate areas. The woman moaned after each blow. He finally dealt with the giant leeches and lifted the visor of the runner's helmet. Instead of a cry of pain, he heard a venomous whisper.
"So what the fuck are you interfering with... What do you want? Who asked you for help? A hero has appeared..." she spat out words filled with regret. "Get lost, you bastard! Such a beautiful dream interrupted me. Fucking idiot! How can a woman be interrupted at a time like this? A vandal!!!..."
Are hurriedly stood up and fled, leaving behind his grumbling companion, who continued to hurl insults at him for a long time. Finally, his rival, brandishing her weapon, began to walk away, angry as all the devils—all put together.
"The road to hell is paved with good intentions," runner number four quoted a well-known saying, tapping his helmet with his pistol. "After all, she's a rival. I should care about eliminating her," he reproached himself. Afterward, he laughed for a long time at his own charity. "I'm so hurt, I wonder what she dreamed?" he asked in his mind. Suddenly, he heard insistent words; it was a consciousness alien to him.
"Imagine you had a shared dream. But for her, it didn't end so quickly, because, as you know, women experience and endure things longer. You have to admit, it was quite a pleasant sensation," rumbled an internal laugh, which the surprised listener recognized as the voice of a telepath. Ston quickened his pace as if to escape the unpleasant cackle.
The ground became hard and rocky. Finally, the marshy terrain ended. The bogs solidified, and the trees no longer obscured the view. Ston stood on a rise. Sandy terrain stretched before him.
A frozen sea of golden sand shimmered in the sun, and a faint breeze created rippling dunes. The space rippled with heat, creating shimmering mirages of golden water. Beyond, a ribbon of silvery river meandered. Behind her stretched the forest, bristling like the hump of a frightened cat, with huge ulcers bursting on its neck and forming terrifying craters.
The sight before runner number four filled him with optimism and gave him renewed strength. He checked the pulsing digits on the timer monitor. He had covered 3,627 meters. He had killed twenty attacking creatures. In total, he had scored 5,627 points. He had about a kilometer and a half left to complete the race. The surface, undulating with dunes, was about a kilometer long and ended at the rocky bank of a river that was about a hundred meters wide.
"So, on the other side of the water, the desired finish line awaits me, and the accounting for the losses I don't have," he remarked with satisfaction, slapping his muscular thighs cheerfully. "I have no equipment damage, let alone physical damage. No negative points. That will be quite a good result. Worthy of first place," he added proudly.
Are slowly resumed running, but after a while he had to slow down, almost walking. The ground had become muddy. He stopped frequently and looked around carefully, as befits an experienced scout. The sky was clear, and there was no sign of an aerial attack. This surprised him somewhat, because on this exposed surface he could be seen from a considerable distance. He was an easy target for some winged creature. He estimated the distance to the water's surface by eye. The runner was about a hundred meters from the river. He hoped the telepath was attending to the other test participants and had finally given him peace. He thought with distaste of the mutant who had supposedly influenced the scenario of his struggle, and immediately regretted it. He lost his footing.
The sand formed a vortex. A huge funnel formed, drawing the runner into its center. Instinctive fear gripped Ston. He panicked, but the harder he tried to claw his way to the surface, the more powerfully something large trembled, sucking his prey deeper. His arms were weakening, his legs trembling with the effort. As he lost his strength, he realized he couldn't avoid virtual death. He remembered the words of the commander who had trained him on the training ground in his youth.
"...every problem should be considered calmly, without unnecessary stress..."
Are slowly regained control of himself, began searching for ways to avoid death, and fought against his growing anxiety. Shooting at the sand made no sense. His mind filled with images of slimy earthworms with writhing bodies. It seemed he was doomed to a slow death, being ground up in the long digestive tract of some slowworm. He gave up, resignedly lowered his helmet visor, and brought the laser pistol to his mouth.
The monster slowly sucked in the sand, while its helpless victim awaited the inevitable end, staring into the funnel-shaped throat that grew larger with each passing moment. Runner number four gripped the trigger of the pistol tighter. With a trembling finger, he pressed until the first resistance. He expected that at any moment the virtual helmet would generate an electrical impulse, and he would begin to convulse with the electric shock. The last thought of the explosion of pain in his real skull lit up his face with hope. He hastily removed the gun from his mouth.
"I have a solution!" He yelled enthusiastically and tapped his helmet with the blaster. "I'm such a slacker! I'll blow up this underground worm. I'll give him an explosive meal. The voracious son of a bitch!"
He readied the pistol grip to pull the safety pin, which triggered the fuse, and within five seconds, detonation occurred. Fortunately, he had been paying attention during the training session when the telepath had explained how to operate the universal laser pistol. His hands were shaking with nerves. He tried to control himself so as not to make any mistakes. He knew this was his last resort and any mistake would be irreversible.
"Get out of this sand, you disgusting mole," he shouted at his tormentor. He cursed and insulted the thing to give himself courage. "Show me your disgusting face! You fat worm!" He waited frantically for the right moment. "Come on, come to me. This will be your last belch."
The monster revealed its rounded form. From the sand, surprisingly, emerged enormous hips, similar to those of a human. What he saw surprised and embarrassed Stone. He unconsciously corrected his last statement.
"Or a fart," he said through gritted teeth. "I'll scan that chubby little face and butt of yours for a bit. Now!!!" He waited for the right moment. He unlatched the grenade and threw it deep into the fleshy throat.
A dull boom echoed. A shudder ran through the surface, then sand rippled and gushed in a fountain that swept the man upward. As the recoil weakened, the limp body fell. A cloud of dust slowly descended, obscuring the figure, which had assumed a fetal position. Buried, he clambered out of the sand a moment later, gasping for air. With bruised hands, he lowered the visor of his helmet, which he had raised when he intended to commit suicide. The barrel-shaped remains rolled along the sloping bank, belching burnt smoke. Some of them splashed into the river before hissing. A couple of fish leaped above the surface. They resembled large veiltails, but their massive jaws, studded with pointed teeth, clearly indicated their feeding habits.
Are lowered his hands and sat down resignedly on a rock. He realized he'd lost the weapon he needed, which would result in a significant penalty. All he had left was a long knife. He pulled it from its sheath and began drawing mindless shapes on the sand. He looked into the river, which foamed red where hungry piranhas feasted. He barely refrained from cursing the psychic mutant; the insults rose to his lips. The awareness of the penalty points prevented the runner from grabbing some juicy bunch from the telepath. But silence wasn't easy and required a tremendous effort of will.
After some reflection and calming down, Ston decided to keep the piranhas occupied during the crossing. He decided to lure the fish to a single spot so they could cross the river upstream. He eagerly got to work. One by one, he rolled away pieces of the torn creature, which could be pieced back together. It was a thick snake, terminating at either end in anal and oral openings shaped like human hips. As the remains of the massive torso were thrown into the water, a fight for food broke out. The river boiled with hungry fish, and bloody foam spurted from the water.
One piece of the snakelike earthworm remained, but it was the furthest away and looked very heavy. The surviving anal and oral cavity was the other end of the creature and had suffered the least damage in the explosion. At first, he wanted to give up rolling it, exhausted by the work. However, after thinking it over, he decided it would be better to use everything to quench the hunger of the voracious piranhas. He slowly approached the lump of flesh. He took a few deep breaths to gather his strength and leaned back against it. Suddenly, something moved inside. Are jumped back and watched the strange phenomenon intently. Some living creature was struggling in its entrails, stretching the tough skin in several places, stretching it to its limits.
"Something's about to hatch! I can't roll such a chunk of meat quickly. It's still a long way to the water. What should I do, run?" he wondered, knowing time was running out. Finally, he made what he believed was the right decision. "What do I care? The creature is small, and it will be weakened by childbirth. And if it attacks me, I'll score more points," he decided, pleased with his calculations.
He pierced the calloused skin with his knife and waited to see what emerged from the small opening. Suddenly, a silver glove shot out from the entrails. Ston jumped with fear and, at the last moment, refrained from reflexively striking with the knife. He watched in surprise as his other hand grabbed the edge of the hole and hastily tore at the severed skin. The runner woke from his stupor. With slashes of the knife, he widened the gap and pulled out the slimy figure. He felt like a veterinarian dragging a fetal calf that had finally landed on him, out of the corner of his eye he saw the protective suit number, it was the familiar number five.
The freed woman squeezed my ribs with her thighs. She hastily pressed the button on her belt to open the suit. She threw off her helmet, freeing her blond hair, and howled ferociously.
"Uuuuuffff!!! What the fuck are you doing lying there? Undress me! Hurry up!" She blurted out, trying to quickly remove the suit, which clung tightly to her firm body. "Move it! Faster, you fucking idiot!
" "Easy! I don't want you to say I forgot about foreplay later," Ston retorted, surprised by the runner's unexpected behavior. He was cautious, on guard against her. He'd met her in the early stages of the competition and, of course, remembered her words and insults.
"Stop nagging! Get to work! Get moving, you clumsy!" she shouted insistently.
Ston didn't need much persuading, because the body revealed in the increasingly larger pieces was impressive. He felt a growing excitement and admitted to himself that this was finally virtual, safe sex, where anything goes. He pulled the last pieces of the suit off the runner, and she moaned.
"Ssss... Oh yes! Faster! What a relief! Ssss... Still here! Oh yes! Yesss..."
Heat radiated from her sweaty body, beads of sweat gathered on the surface of her breasts, then dripped from her erect nipples. And Are, speechless, watched as huge drops spattered against the visor of his helmet. He felt aroused beyond endurance. He tried to open his suit, which was crumpled at the crotch, but his belt buckle happened to be pressed against his. He began to search between the now naked woman's legs, searching for the right button. At that moment, the runner stood up as if scalded and ran towards the water. Ston slowly realized what was truly causing her strange behavior. He quickly stood up and ran after her.
"Damn it!" What a fool I am," he admitted, mocking himself. "She was inside that slimy monster for a long time. Eventually, stomach acids began to dissolve the fibers of her protective clothing," he explained to himself the strange behavior of his fellow runner. "Naively, I thought it was me she got so hot."
Ston, trying to catch up with his fellow runner, lifted the visor of his helmet and shouted. Meanwhile, the naked woman jumped joyfully into the water, splashing her arms like a child.
"Stop!!! Piranhas! Get out of the river!" he shouted in vain, waving his arms. "Predatory fish! Get out of the water, you lunatic!"
Are finally caught the girl in his arms and lifted her. He ran out of the water, holding her in his arms. They sat down together on the riverbank. One of the fish had bitten through the protective material of his trousers. He tore the piranha from his calf, and a trickle of blood flowed. The piranha jumped helplessly on the rocks.
Runner number five stared blankly, gasping for air—like a fish twitching on the shore. She was in shock, and it took her a long moment to calm down. When she realized she was naked in the arms of an unknown man, she growled,
