Childhood is the stage that leaves the deepest sense of vulnerability; I view it as a period of helplessness, easily scarred by any external intrusion. A child lacks the ability to defend themselves or even to discern the nature of those around them—whether they represent good or evil. Amidst this helplessness, wounds are formed that may linger for a long time; they surface later in maturity, as one begins to comprehend past experiences, ultimately making the subsequent journey far heavier than anticipated.
