Bessie

Bessie, also known as "Bessie of the South Bay," is a mysterious cryptid first described in the second half of the 19th century in Lake Erie. Legends of its existence gained popularity following a report by the Dusseau brothers, who in 1880 discovered an unusual creature resembling a sturgeon, approximately 10 meters long. Although the creature died and was lost upon the brothers' return, the descriptions continue to intrigue researchers and cryptozoology enthusiasts. Since then, reports of similar sightings have continued to surface in the lake region, leaving the Bessie mystery unsolved.

Sunset over Lake ErieThe "South Bay Bessie," or simply Bessie, is a cryptid (or cryptids) found in Lake Erie, North America. The first reports of sightings of this animal date back to the second half of the 19th century.

One of the first was a report by two Frenchmen, the Dusseau brothers, in late 1880. They encountered a "dying sturgeon lying on the shore of a lake." The creature soon expired. The brothers hurried away to report their find to the veterinary authorities, but when they returned, the creature was gone.

According to the brothers' descriptions, the animal was "30 feet (about 10 meters) long, with large scales and long arms or fins. Some of the scales were the size of a silver dollar."

The Dusseau brothers' description somewhat matches that of a globster. However, in this case, the creature was still showing signs of life when it was discovered.

Since then, similar "oddities" have been found in the Lake Erie area, but the mystery remains unsolved.
