# **Chapter: The Silence Before the Change**
Marek stood by the window, looking out at the cobblestone street. Autumn was cool in the city, and the wind carried the scent of damp from the Vistula River. The house was quiet. His wife, Elżbieta, was preparing dinner, and the children – Piotr and Aleksandra – were doing their homework in the next room.
"Mom... Mom!" came Piotr's soft voice.
Elżbieta looked up from her plate. "What happened?"
"I want to go to that concert... Everyone's going, and I can't," he replied, his voice trembling slightly.
Marek turned away from the window. His eyes were heavy. "Piotr... not everything is for us. You have responsibilities. School, studying, and then work. Life doesn't always give you what you want."
Aleksandra sat in the corner, watching her father. A hint of defiance appeared in her eyes. *It's always been this way—silence, duty, lack of choice… But I don't want to be like that.*
After dinner, Marek sat down at the table. "We're talking about serious matters," he began, his tone stern. "I don't want you to make mistakes I regret. Life requires hard work and discipline."
"What if we want something more?" Aleksandra asked quietly but firmly.
Marek lowered his gaze. Silence reigned for several long seconds. There was more to it than words—a lifetime, the weight of years of work, choices, and fear.
"I don't know…" he finally whispered. "I don't know if anyone can ever have everything they want."
Aleksandra stood and went to the window. She looked out at the street, at the children running through the puddles. "I want to try," she said to herself. "I can't live like everyone else before me."
Marek sighed. He knew he couldn't stop her. Perhaps for the first time in years, understanding dawned in his eyes—that sometimes freedom weighs more than duty.
And in that quiet kitchen, in a house filled with silence and tradition, something new began to sprout—a seed of courage that would one day transform the entire family.
