Cattle mutilations
We were walking along this road when we were caught in a thunderstorm. We spotted the animal as we approached. We went back to check it out and found it mutilated. We examined it and discovered that all its sexual organs had been removed. Its eyes and eyelids had also been removed. It was definitely not the work of predators. A predator couldn't have done it because all the surgical work was done by a specialist..." This was the account of rancher C.E. Potts in 1990.
This is a typical description of a phenomenon first documented in the early 1970s after reports from ranchers in the US states of Minnesota and Kansas. Such mutilations had never been found in cattle before, requiring surgical precision that surpassed the capabilities of predators (which ranchers were familiar with). The selectivity is also remarkable: often only the eyes, tongue, or genitals are removed, and quite often there is a complete absence of blood. Theories attempting to explain this phenomenon include satanic cults, aliens, government experiments (unmarked black helicopters have often been sighted in the area), and strange diseases. However, to date, no satisfactory explanation has been found.
