Residents of cities in the UK and southwestern US have complained of an annoying humming sound with an unidentified source. Researchers have also been unable to pinpoint the source of the humming. Not everyone can hear the low-pitched humming, and therefore it appears to be a natural phenomenon—it's maddening. In 1997, a British newspaper received nearly 800 letters from people complaining of insomnia, irritability, poor health, and an inability to read or study caused by the persistent humming.
The phenomenon is best known in the United States as the Taos Hum. It is particularly troublesome for "hearers" in Taos, New Mexico, who banded together in 1993 and petitioned Congress to investigate and help determine the source of the noise. However, no cause for the phenomenon has been found.
One leading theory is that the humming sound is caused by a military communications system used to communicate with submarine crews.
