I'm looking out the window on another sleepless night. First, I gaze at the star-studded sky, then at the port sparkling in the distance and the Long Market nestled against it. I'm fascinated by this view; in fact, I am every time I sit at the window and simply gaze.
Suddenly... suddenly, I find myself on the roof of a nearby tenement house, the color of a ripe lemon! I look, and on one of the many chimneys sits a black tomcat, furiously licking its paw. I wonder what, or who, hurt it, because the cat must be licking its wound.
The cat's image blurred, and I saw an illuminated fountain and heard water trickling merrily. I looked up at Neptune's face, and he smiled crookedly, almost mischievously, at me. I closed my eyes and shook my head, and after another glance up, I saw a dove with a beautiful flower in its beak, one I'd never seen before. The pigeon glanced at me and flew away, and on a sudden impulse, I turned and managed to dodge a swarm of giggling spirits.
Completely disoriented by these spirits, I found myself at the port, beneath the enormous Crane, the place where my mother and I often eat ice cream during the Dominican Fair. A young couple stood at the railing opposite our shared ice cream shop, holding hands. In an instant, the girl let go of the boy's hand, shook her long auburn hair, stood on the wall, climbed over the railing, and jumped into the slowly turbid water. I reached the railing in almost a single bound. I was about to jump and save the girl when everything around me swirled, as if I were in a portal, rippled, danced, and...
I found myself at my window again, my eyes glowing, partly with the light of the port and the stars, and partly with the longing for dreams.
