"Yeah... he's flirting with that dyed blonde as usual..." she said angrily.
"What are you saying?
" "Nothing..." she replied. "Let's keep playing ."
A PE lesson. It always went the same way. A volleyball match, one class facing the other.
"Karolina, your serves
." Karolina, a pretty, shapely teenager, third year in middle school. A typical tomboy. She always hung out with the boys. That's why playing a match with the boys wasn't a problem for her.
Marcin, her boyfriend. Handsome, sought after by girls. Karolina is his first real girlfriend. However, he often catches himself flirting with other girls. He knows it infuriates Karolina. But sometimes he can't handle it.
Then there's Krzysiek. Marcin's friend. He keeps an eye on him, making sure he doesn't overdo it with the other girls. Although both he and Karolina know that Karolina is the only one truly important to him, they both often scold him for his actions.
She cast furious glances at Marcin and Karolina, her classmate, Patrycja. They were flirting under the net, waiting for a serve.
The girl looked pleadingly at Krzysiek.
"Do something..." she mouthed silently. Krzysiek spread his hands helplessly.
Karolina felt her blood boil. She tossed the ball up and hit it with all her might.
"Ouch!" Marcin shouted. Laughter echoed through the gym.
"Sorry," she said in an exaggeratedly sweet tone.
"Are you okay?" Patrycja asked.
Marcin caught Karolina's quick glance.
"Nothing..." he replied without emotion and changed his position on the court.
***
She changed her clothes in silence and quickly left the locker room. Marcin was waiting for her at the exit.
"Honey, don't I deserve an apology for hitting the ball?" he asked carelessly. He was joking.
She didn't bother looking at him. She was furious.
"Hey, what's wrong?" – he became concerned when his girlfriend walked past him without noticing.
She didn't stop.
"Karolka, what are you doing? Why are you angry?" he demanded.
"Why?" She turned around, bursting out. "Ask your bleached one! She'll definitely tell you! And she'll even kiss your forehead to stop it from hurting!"
She left him alone with his thoughts. And only then did he understand what was going on. He was angry. Angry with himself. He couldn't contain himself again. He didn't understand why this was happening to him. Why he reacted this way to other girls. "
You rocked it, man," Krzysiek snapped. "
Get lost, okay?" Marcin replied angrily. He knew Karolina wouldn't apologize easily. She was angry like never before.
"How long until the next lesson?" he asked. "
About twenty minutes, so what?"
He was gone. He threw Krzysiek his backpack and ran out of the school. To the flower shop on the corner. If he wanted to be on time, he had to hurry.
***
"I can't stand it anymore, do you understand? I can't… he's always looking at other people. What am I missing? What do I have to do to make him like me too?" she complained to Krzysiek.
"Karolina, but you know he only loves you."
"It seems so, but why is he always flirting with other girls? And the worst of all is that girl from second grade. She follows him around like she's stalking him. And instead of dismissing her, he's even making fun of her! It shouldn't be like this!
" "I know… but he's trying…"
They were sitting on a bench in the cafeteria. Krzysiek was still looking for Marcin. He breathed a sigh of relief when he finally saw him.
He walked up to Karolina and knelt before her. He held a dozen red roses in his hand.
"I'm sorry…" he said. That was all he could manage.
Karolina stood up. She looked from Marcin to the roses, unable to stop admiring his thousand different faces. Finally, she smiled. She didn't care that everyone passing by was casting curious glances their way.
"Get up, idiot," she said, laughing. They locked lips in a kiss.
***
"Karolina, you know that girl means nothing to me. If she wants to follow me around, let her. I only have you and no one else," he replied, when she slightly suggested that the situation was irritating her. She decided to give it a rest today. Maybe she'd bring this up again someday... or maybe she wouldn't have to?
They met at the stadium. They'd arranged to meet Krzysiek and his girlfriend. They both decided to arrive a little early and spend some time alone together.
They sat on a bench, huddled together, gazing at each other. Marcin began whispering sweet nothings in her ear. They sealed their confession with a long kiss.
"Hi Marcin!" they heard, and as if on cue, they both turned around.
Karolina felt as if struck by lightning. It was that annoying girl again! She was following him again!
"Hi," Marcin replied, smiling. "
How are you?" the girl asked, approaching with her friend. "
Everything's fine," the boy smiled even wider. "After all, I'm surrounded by beautiful girls." He winked at her.
When Karolina heard this, she let go of his hand.
"I have to go. See you at school," the girl said, sending Marcin a smile.
As soon as she was a safe distance away, Karolina spoke up .
"I'm sick of this, Marcin. You know? I'm so sick of this." She stood
up and walked away.
"Karolina! Wait!" Marcin shouted after her, but she wasn't listening. She ran ahead, ignoring the tears already streaming down her cheeks.
***
He wanted to catch up with her. Krzysiek stopped him.
"What was that about again?" he asked, but didn't even wait for an answer. "No, wait, I know. Which one were you hitting on this time?"
"Where's Sylwia?" Marcin changed the subject. He didn't want to talk about it now. He was afraid it was over. That Karolina wouldn't be placated. "She
couldn't come. She has important exams tomorrow."
It was almost dark outside. Suddenly, Marcin felt strange. He felt something had happened. That something was wrong.
Suddenly he heard a scream. A terrifying scream.
"It's Karolina!" he said, and ran forward. Krzysiek, without thinking, followed him.
***
She lay unconscious on the cold asphalt, face down.
"Take care of her, I'm chasing that bastard!" "— Marcin shouted, and with all his might, he began to run after the fleeing boy, who was holding Karolina's purse.
Krzysiek tried to wake her. He talked to her, shouted, shook her… but she didn't move. He didn't have his phone on him. He couldn't call an ambulance. Unfortunately, no one was passing by. He could only wait for Marcin and continue trying to wake Karolina. Then he noticed the knife. His heart sank.
Marcin returned a few minutes later. He retrieved his purse. He tried to calm his breathing.
Krzysiek took his cell phone out of Karolina's purse.
Marcin couldn't control his tears. He held Karolina's unconscious hands to himself, stroked her cheeks, talked to her… he just wanted to look into her eyes one more time.
***
He didn't come to the funeral. He didn't have the strength. He had never cried as much as he did then. He had completely isolated himself from social life. And despite Krzysiek's best efforts, Marcin was fading away day by day.
He reminded himself of every mistake he had made. Every situation that could have hurt Karolina.
