The gift of life

Ania ran away from Tomek with tears in her eyes. How could he do this to her? How could he? She ran, only one thought racing through her mind – the person she trusted implicitly had let her down. She had no idea what to do with herself or where to go… she wouldn't be coming home. As soon as her parents found out what had happened, they would throw her out. She preferred to be homeless herself, sparing herself the comments, the arguments – everything her parents would offer her when they heard she was pregnant. She stopped at the park… she had already made her first decision – she wouldn't be coming back. She briefly considered how immature the idea was, but it didn't matter much now… none at all… what difference did one more "irresponsibility" make? She had let everyone down and stopped trusting others.
She sat down on a bench, closed her eyes, and thought about what had just happened. She still pictured Tomek, who with great difficulty lowered his hand as he rose to strike – but he couldn't control his anger, or rather, the rage he fell into when he heard about the child and the prospect of a so-called responsible, adult life together. Sure, she realized he might not be happy – she was angry with herself – but to get so worked up and erase everything that had happened with a few harsh words, those five years they'd spent together, those promises of a future together… She couldn't believe that this loving, caring, warm man had turned into an inhuman demon devoid of any positive feelings. And she absolutely couldn't come to terms with what he told her at the end: "It's either the child or me." She was proud of herself for choosing the child – at least the child would love her with a sincere, childlike love. However, without any support, it would be difficult for her to experience that feeling. But she was certain she wouldn't give up easily, wouldn't give up—on the contrary, she would prove to all these people that she was capable, that she knew how to navigate her life, dominated by immaturity.
Suddenly, a friendly, warm voice roused her from her reverie. She lifted her head and saw an old woman standing over her, trying to connect with her with a caring expression on her face. Hearing that the woman wanted to listen and help her, Ania told her her entire story. The old woman, silently sitting next to the girl, held her hand, and patiently listened to the story.
When Ania finished, the woman hugged her and promised help:
"If you want, you can stay with me, I'll help you..."
Ania looked through tears at this complete stranger who had simply offered her a roof over her head and a place to stay. Completely surprised, she followed the old woman. The woman lived in a large house right next to the park. As it later turned out, this wasn't entirely selfless help, as the woman, due to her advanced age, was looking for someone to care for her. However, she didn't want a qualified nurse, but someone who could offer her friendship. Mrs. Halina – that was the name of the kind old woman – despite being very wealthy and having everything she wanted, she had no friends or family – as she herself said, "I have everything, and yet absolutely nothing." When Ania heard of the charming old woman's unusual offer, she accepted; after all, she had nothing to lose and everything to gain. And so, she began a new chapter in her life. A chapter she would dedicate entirely to the kind old woman who had offered her her love and help. Even then, on the bench, Ania couldn't understand how a complete stranger could give her what those she counted on most refused to give. She couldn't explain to herself how it was possible that Tomek didn't want to know her, was afraid to show himself to her parents, and yet this woman, in exchange for friendship, would provide her with everything she needed. She probably will never understand.
From that moment on, she devoted herself completely to caring for Halina. Together, with their combined efforts, they created a home filled with warmth and love. Over time, they became family, like grandmother and granddaughter. Ania stopped thinking about Paweł, stopped worrying about what her parents thought, and stopped worrying that the whole situation was and would always be a nightmare. On the contrary, she began to treat the pregnancy as a gift that completely transformed her life, bringing with it a series of changes that positively impacted her well-being. Halina also considered meeting Ania something magical that colored and enriched her life. And the thought of a child, a step-granddaughter, filled her with energy and joy.
