
What do Michael Jackson, Lil Peep, Mac Miller, Ozzy Osbourne, Princess Diana, George Floyd and Iryna Zarucka have in common?
All of them – like many other deceased celebrities and victims of high-profile tragedies – have become the subjects of recordings circulating on social media, purporting to be messages from the “afterlife.”EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) videos or "spirit box" sessions , in which the supposed voices of the dead answer questions, garner hundreds of thousands of views. For some, they are fascinating proof of life after death, or at least intriguing entertainment. For others, they are a shocking way of capitalizing on tragedy and violating the dignity of the deceased.
In this article, we examine the ethical, legal, psychological and cultural aspects of publishing such content, using some of the most high-profile examples from recent years.
