From Alec Guinness's mysterious prophecy, through the disturbing premonitions of loved ones, to a series of tragic events involving his Porsche 550 Spyder, Dean's story is a reminder of the complexity of human fate and the impact of destiny on life. What secrets does this tragic tale hold?
It was a September evening in 1955. Alec Guinness, soon to become a major star of British film and theater, had arrived in Los Angeles to shoot his first Hollywood film, The Swan. As he and his companion, screenwriter Thelma Moss, were looking for a table at a restaurant, the twenty-four-year-old American actor, dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt, suggested they join him.
First, however, he showed them his recently purchased, shiny silver race car, a Porsche 550 Spyder, of which he was very proud. The vehicle was indeed impressive, but for some reason, Guinness felt uneasy. Years later, in his autobiography, Blessings in Disguise, he recalled that he couldn't help but feel that the car bore a sinister imprint.
Suddenly and completely unexpectedly, as if he were speaking someone else's words, he very seriously asked the young blond actor never to get into a car. As he began to speak, he glanced at his watch and said, "It's 10 p.m., Friday, September 23, 1955. If you get into this car, you'll be dead by this time next week."
The startled young man laughed, and Guinness apologized for his bizarre behavior. Seven days later, on September 30, just before 6 p.m., his strange prophecy came true: within hours, Guinness and the entire world were shocked by the news of the young actor's untimely death. He was killed instantly in a collision with a black Ford near the California town of Cholame, while driving his new silver car to a race in Salinas.
