The walking stick bug

, or Phasmatodea, is a master of camouflage found throughout North America, especially in the forested regions of the United States, southern Canada, and Mexico, where its twig-like body blends seamlessly into branches and shrubs. Feeding mainly on the leaves of oak, hazelnut, blackberry and other native plants, this gentle herbivore shapes the landscape through subtle pruning. Its ecological importance is deeper than its quiet presence: the sticks help to get nutrients back in the soil, support plant diversity and provide food for birds, small mammals and reptiles. In the forests of North America, this almost invisible insect reminds us that even the smallest and slowest steps can support an entire ecosystem...❣️
