Dryn! The bell rings for Polish class. A crowd of laughing youngsters pours into the classroom. They finish eating their sandwiches, talking, and whispering to each other with animated excitement.
"Silence!" shouts the young, portly teacher. "Please stand up. Good morning!
" "Good morning!" Giggles spread throughout the classroom.
"Quiet," I said. "I'm here today, replacing Mrs. Korzeń."
"And where is Mrs. Korzeń?" asked the redheaded, freckled girl from the third desk by the window.
"She has something important to attend to, urgent family matters. Well, that's not what we were supposed to be talking about. What fabric did you end up with?
" "Silk." Everyone burst into laughter.
"Very funny! So what have you been working on lately?" The teacher remained composed. "
We were altering a dress into trousers and a vest."
"Stop it, Dawid!" All eyes turned to Dominika, who rose from her seat—she loved Polish. "Sir, don't worry about him. We recently read "The Hobbit," and we're supposed to start today.
"Kablara!
" "Piss off!"
"Piss off yourself, you suck-up!"
"Oh, stop it. Thank you, Dominika." He smiled broadly, revealing yellowish teeth, probably stained by cigarettes.
"This is Nika, sir.
" "Nika? Okay, that's a nice diminutive. I'm taking attendance! Number one?
" "Present.
" "Number..." "
Good morning, sorry I'm late." A petite brunette entered the classroom. Chin-length hair, smiling, sparkling gray eyes, a short denim skirt, and a pale, light-green sweater.
"And is that you? Are you the new girl?
" "Yes, my name is Natalia Zielińska."
"Marysia mentioned something to me. I mean, Mrs. Korzeń." He smiled, his face turning slightly red. "Sit down." Everyone was looking at the new girl. She took a seat next to Justyna, the blue-eyed, brunette.
"Hey!
" "Hi.
" "What's your name?
" "Justyna. "
"I'm Natalia, I think you've heard. Can I sit here? " "
Sure.
" "Come on, calm down! We need to get to class. Would anyone like to remind us of the time and place of the novel's action?" Nika's hand automatically shot up, much to the class's delight. She'd been talking about her "Hobbit" almost until the end of the lesson. "
Who are you hanging out with, Justyna?"
"Julia, Ala, Patrycja, Kaśka... What?
" "Nothing, I'm just asking. What about the boys?
" "Tomek, Adrian, Michał. Hey, what do you need that for?
" "Don't get mad, I just want to get in on some group. "
"Why mine?
" "I don't know, you seem nice, but why don't you want to?"
"I can. "
"So, relax, do you have a boyfriend?"
"I do. Why did they transfer you?"
"I transferred myself." Everyone in class teased me, I was the victim of money extortion, even attempted rape.
-Ooo
"Don't listen to her—they kicked her out for bad behavior and bad grades, psst," Jola whispered in her ear, sitting in the back. Justyna, however, had never been particularly close to Jola, so she ignored her words.
"You know he's her boyfriend?"
"Who? And whose?
" "That 'Polish teacher'." I saw them together yesterday on the corner of Marszałkowska Street. They were walking hand in hand—him and Korzeniowa.
"Wow, I didn't know..."
"Well, now you know. So, what's your boyfriend's name?
" "My boyfriend?
" "Well, you said you had someone. "
"Oh, that's Kuba, he's from class 3i.
" "Okay, what are you doing after class?"
"I don't know yet.
" "Let me know when you find out.
" "Okay." End of class, the last class. Everyone's rushing for the door to get home as quickly as possible. Justyna walked up to her friends—Julia and Alicja.
"Hey, where are the others?"
"They went home, they were in a hurry. Justyna, why are you hanging out with that new girl?
" "What do you mean, why? She joined us, she's actually cool.
" "Cool?! Are you crazy! They kicked her out of school, how can she be cool?! "
But she said...
" "Oh, hey, girls! What are you up to?"
"Hi... Nothing interesting." Suddenly, someone covered Justyna's eyes.
"Oh, it's you! Hi, Kitten." The boy gave her a kiss and greeted the others.
"I don't think we know each other?" He extended his hand to Natalia.
"No, but we can get to know each other. Natalia, nice to meet you."
"Kuba."
"I have to go now," Alka asked shyly. "
Why?"
"Sorry, have fun."
"Oh, we're leaving soon too."
"Come on, let's just stop by the bathroom; I need to touch up my makeup." The new girl was already taking her lipstick out of her black leather backpack.
"Okay." Jula and Justyna followed her into the restroom, Kuba staying by the door.
"It's the women's restroom after all!
" "Don't exaggerate, get in!" Natalia pulled him in. Justyna went into the toilet, Julia too. Kuba sat on the windowsill, Nowa stood by the mirror. What Jula saw as she exited the toilet only left her speechless, and she shut herself inside again. She whispered,
"Come out, quickly!" Justyna stood in front of the two. Natalia was hanging around her boyfriend's neck, and he didn't object at all. He kissed her. Justyna, red-faced and furious, walked up to him and slapped him across the face.
"You bastard! We're done!" He didn't even care. He continued to deal with his "new" friend. Justyna ran out, followed by Julia. She hid by the cloakroom.
"Let me be alone for a moment, please, just a moment..." "It's
okay." After a moment, Justyna rose and pressed her tear-stained cheek into her friend's arms.
"Don't worry, Justyna, it's okay. He wasn't worthy of you."
"I know he wasn't, but I love him!"
"Then stop it! How can anyone love such a boor!
I don't know how!
" "Shh, don't cry anymore. Come here, we'll go home. And you know what? I don't think I want a boyfriend. A guy's a pig.
" "Yes, you're right—a guy's a pig!"
"And I don't want to hang out with that Natalia!" "
Well, I guess that's obvious..." They left the school and entered the sunny, cobblestone street. They crossed to the other side and began to walk away, still holding hands and pulling new tissues from their backpacks to wipe Justinian's tears.
