Miirri

Among the little-known cryptozoological mysteries, the mysterious miirri dogs, also known as Miirriuula, stand out. These extraordinary creatures are part of the Aboriginal legends of the Wiradjuri tribe, which inhabits central-western New South Wales, Australia. Described as small, black dogs with large, red eyes, miirri can change size and disappear when spotted.

Among the most intriguing, yet little-known, cryptozoological mysteries are undoubtedly the mysterious Australian miirri dogs (also known as Miirriuula). They are recounted by the Wiradjuri Aborigines of central-western New South Wales. Tales of these dogs are reminiscent of those associated with British and North American Black Dogs. Like them, miirri live on the murky edge between myth and reality.

Let's take a closer look. At first glance, Miirri is a small, unassuming black dog with large, red eyes, resembling a German Shepherd graying with age. The longer you look at him, the larger he becomes, even growing to the size of a calf. He disappears the second you look at him, as if he had vanished into thin air.

The Aborigines describe these dogs something like this:

They follow you and chase you away. They live in the river, in the water, and their eyes are as big as saucers. Their eyes are on the sides of their heads, like those of a fish... I've heard many stories about people being followed by these huge dogs at night, right up to their homes. People see them. When someone is fishing in the river, the dog comes out of the water, stands behind them, or follows them. When they look back, the dog grows larger. When they look back, the dog disappears. There's a place we call Miirrigana. Its name comes from the words "miirri," meaning dog, and "ganya," meaning place. Water dogs live there. It's one of our sacred places.
