The next morning arrived. Mikael quickly gathered himself and decided to leave before the devil woke up. He didn't want to see her hello, goodbye. He wanted to say goodbye. He hated her with all his heart at that moment. All her feelings up until now had been feigned. Nothing was real. That was what bothered him most.
After breakfast, he hurried out of the house and went to work. Everyone at school was asking how his wife was doing and if they could do something for him. Mikael politely thanked her and engaged in only short conversations. After work hours, he decided to go to Mr. Brunus. "I don't know why I'm doing Mare this favor. Why should I help him?" In less than 15 minutes, he reached the nearby police station. He didn't actually walk, but he did. He was out of breath, but it eased some of his anxiety. At least for now. As he entered, he looked around the room. He had been to such places many times. He approached the guard sitting behind the desk, scribbling something on some paperwork.
"Excuse me, but Teroli Brunus was locked up here yesterday afternoon.
" "Yes... I'm checking...
" "I'd like to post bail for him. I'm a friend of his from work. I think there's been a mistake.
" "We'll sort everything out in a moment. "
Mikael had been sitting at the police station for over two hours, just signing some papers, before everything was settled. He was terribly bored because it wasn't him who always did it, but Mare. Suddenly, his half-baked thoughts were interrupted by the guard who led Mr. Brunus away.
"Good morning," Mikael greeted with humility in his voice.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Teroli said, confused.
"Perhaps we can talk outside?" Mikael asked in a pleading voice. "That would be best. From now on, you're free. I've taken care of all the formalities."
The surprised former teacher obediently followed Mr. Deed out. As soon as they were a few steps away, the angel began to speak.
"I'm sorry for what happened," he replied. "For everything. It shouldn't have happened."
Teroli had a strange expression on his face. He expressed complete astonishment.
"Wait, are you apologizing for sleeping with your wife?"
Mikael bit his lip, fearing he could have slapped him for saying that, but he knew he had to see this through to the end. With a heavy heart, he explained,
"I'm sorry for losing my job and for the lack of respect from all the teachers you knew. Besides, my wife did it on purpose. I won't hide it from you.
" "Then what do you want from me?
" "I want to help, nothing more. I promise that from this day forward, we will never meet again."
Mikael's words carried a distinct tone of devastation. Teroli, on the other hand, felt very foolish. He wasn't entirely convinced by the angel's words and didn't know what to expect from him. They walked in silence until Mikael led Teroli to the large company building. It was Donagerro's main call center. They entered together and took the elevator to the second floor. Mr. Deed approached the young secretary and handed her some papers from his briefcase. She looked through them carefully, then her gaze shifted to Mr. Brunus.
"Mr. Brunus, I presume?" she turned to him.
"Yes," he replied uncertainly.
"You'll start working for us tomorrow at eight. That's where your position is."
Surprised, Teroli nodded.
"So, we'll meet tomorrow, Mr. Brunus," she said, smiling warmly at him and shaking the new employee's hand.
Immediately afterward, Mikael took Mr. Brunus aside. Teroli didn't know what to say. A huge smile spread across his face.
"Now I'll explain everything," he said, pulling a few things out of his briefcase and placing them one by one in his arms. "Here are some papers explaining your job and what you'll be doing. It's worth reading. And a credit card. That should be enough.
" "What's that supposed to be?
" "A small compensation for all this fuss. A new job position, with better pay, in a new environment where no one knows you. I think that should be enough."
Tears welled up in Teroli's eyes. He didn't know how to thank Mikael for all this. He hugged Mikael tightly. He was so happy he started to shake. The angel slowly pulled away from him. A faint smile appeared on his face. He turned away from Teroli without a word and walked towards the elevator. Suddenly, beautiful white wings sprouted from his shoulder blades. Mr. Brunus stared at him, open-mouthed in disbelief at what he saw. Mikael smiled at him over his shoulder and left.
