Early in the morning, Mikael and Mare went to the elementary school to apply for a position. The devil no longer limped as badly. She had a splint on her ankle. By 8:00 a.m., they were inside. A crowd of scurrying children were rushing to their classrooms, making more noise than a herd of small bison. Mare, completely displeased, pushed the children away to get to the principal's office. Mikael tried to calm the situation, but nothing worked. The tempestuous devil simply hated children, especially the smaller ones. The angel had no idea how she could become a teacher, so he tried to reassure himself that everything would be alright.
By 8:10, they were in the principal's office. He looked at them as if trying to penetrate them, thinking that this way he could learn something about the new arrivals. At one point, he looked at Mikael and smiled.
"Good morning, it's me again," the angel greeted.
"Mr. Deed, I remember... You asked yesterday if there were any vacancies. Today I can answer that there are. For students from 7 to 10 years old, meaning one and the same teacher for three years.
" Mare grimaced when she heard about the little ones, but immediately perked up when the principal said,
"We also need a physical ed teacher in the older classes...
" "I would very much like to take the position..." the devil blurted out.
"And you are...
" "I'm Mikael's wife. Marisa Deed," she introduced herself.
"Nice to meet you, Franco Flores. So you would be interested." So, would Mr. Deed take care of the younger group?
"That suits me, very much," he replied, a hint of excitement in his voice.
Mare noticed that Mikael was genuinely pleased. After all, it was the first time they were doing something completely new. After such consideration, the devil also enjoyed it.
"In that case, I'll just ask for your documents."
Suddenly, as if on cue, a small ghost, invisible to human eyes, appeared and handed Mare the papers into her purse. The devil immediately handed them to Mr. Flores.
"Very charming, so you can start tomorrow. Now, if you'll allow me, I'll show you around the school. Tomorrow you'll receive your lesson plans."
The headmaster's office was located at the end of the ground-floor corridor. Halfway down, a staircase led to the next two floors, where the older students, aged 10 to 13, studied. Next to the main building were two larger rooms and another smaller one. The two larger rooms housed the gymnasium and swimming pool, while the smaller one housed classrooms for students aged 13 to 16. Behind the buildings was a large playing field and a small meadow with benches.
Mikael really liked the new place. When the bell rang, he laughed at the sight of the students running out. He felt comfortable in his new surroundings, which was more than Mare could say. The smiling faces irritated her. She struggled to keep her distaste for everything happening around her from the headmaster's perspective. Her mood improved when she met the teachers. The upper-class P.E. teacher was very handsome and muscular, and easy to get along with. She wanted to start right away, but she preferred to wait until she got to know everyone. Her biology teacher had taken a liking to her. She was terribly thin (not just in her legs and waist), with large, bulging eyes. Her brown hair, tied in a bun, was even more intimidating. She looked like a battered scarecrow. Mare wondered for a moment if she would be terrible and malicious enough to outdo this monster. This monster was named Pr. Miraclesaya Fredro. "Her name could knock anyone out. You don't even have to look at her anymore."
Mikael left Mare alone for a moment and went to the teachers' room for the younger classes. In the room was a young woman sipping coffee. She had beautiful black eyes and hair. By the window to the right stood a middle-aged man in a suit (the angel looked a bit sloppy next to him, wearing only short sleeves and denim pants). On the sofa, in the middle, sat a woman of similar age. She had shoulder-length red hair and glasses. She looked like a walking disaster, but as it later turned out, she was very kind.
"Good morning," he greeted. "I'm Mikael Deed, and starting tomorrow, I'll be working here with you.
" "What luck," said the black-haired girl (she was very short), approaching him. "I'm Roxy Marcelo. It's good that you were hired. Since Sylvester left, we've been short of a teacher for the younger class, and unfortunately, the principal had to take care of her.
" "Yes, Roxy is right," said the red-haired girl. "Serenity Armond, nice to meet you, Mr. Deed. That means deed in English, right?
" "Yes, I know, it's a funny name, and you're...
" "Sorry, Berni Sinto. I teach class A. You'll take class B. It's very difficult. It's hard to take care of these children.
" "Don't worry," assured Mikael. "I'll manage."
