It was one of those beautiful May days when you so desperately want to live. As usual, in the morning, humming to myself, I went shopping. I felt free – I had reason to be happy – no – that love was gone, I'd forgotten. I felt like jumping, but since I was walking down a street full of people, I felt ashamed, and I expressed my joy by giving everyone I met a broad smile. I'll never fall in love again, no, I won't suffer – it's not my psyche – a voice interrupted my thoughts:
"Excuse me, are you coming in or out?" Because I wanted to go inside – but I found myself standing in the doorway of the shop, not moving…
"Oh… Of course… I'm coming in," I stammered, and took a step forward, letting a beautiful girl pass. "NO! Not that! No girls!"
With that resolution, I moved between the shelves, tossing cans and jars into my basket. Finally, I went for my favorite chocolate doughnuts. And everything would have been fine, except that SHE was standing by the bread baskets. SHE AGAIN. A tall blonde with shiny hair and striking blue eyes. A miracle, not a girl. Pay no attention, I repeated my mantra, and boldly went for the doughnuts. Unfortunately, just as I reached for a doughnut, SHE extended her hand. Even more unfortunate, there was only one doughnut left.
The girl blushed and turned to another shelf, and to show what a gentleman I was, I wrapped a doughnut and handed it to her, saying,
"Take it, I'll survive somehow," my voice sounding strangely high-pitched.
"No, you were there first," I heard that magical, almost hypnotic voice again.
"You know, I have a solution—one doughnut, two people, you have to eat it together, but I always eat it with tea. There's a nice café nearby that serves delicious tea; maybe we can enjoy the unfortunate doughnut there?" "Oh my god, I couldn't think of a better line! I could just run away...
" "Hmm, I don't really know you, but I can always recognize you." She finished her statement with a captivating smile that made something heavy sink into my stomach.
"Uh...uh...uh...shall we go?"
"Lead the way :)"
We went to the checkout, I paid for my purchases, feeling terribly embarrassed about some of the items, like the canned goods. She seemed like a classy girl who only eats savory lobster. We left, and I led her down the aisle to my favorite cafe, "White Roses"—we didn't say a word the entire way.
We sat by the window, I ordered two teas with cinnamon, and then came the moment I dreaded most. Silence. I had to start a conversation.
"So, can you at least tell me your name?" I asked in the most standard way.
"My name is Victoria, I've only lived here a short time, you're actually the first person I've met."
"Well, there are tons of nice people here, you'll definitely meet a lot of them ;) And I'm Calvin:)
The conversation progressed quickly; it turned out we understood each other well, and our conversation was very enthusiastic. We spent over two hours in the café when I jumped up and realized I was supposed to go shopping for the morning, but instead I was sitting there quietly, and the whole family hadn't had breakfast. I explained to Victoria that I had to get back, paid the bill, and we left the café together. I walked her home—she lived in a newly developed neighborhood. Then I ran home as fast as I could, where, of course, a stern reprimand awaited me. While unpacking the groceries, I realized the package of chocolate hadn't been consumed after all. I was actually happy about that—I had another excuse to meet the blonde princess." So I waited until noon, when my mother finally released me from my household duties, carefully dressed, and headed for the house where I'd parted ways with Victoria, clutching the unfortunate doughnut. With shaking hands, I rang the doorbell. A moment later, an elderly lady opened the door...
"Good morning, may I see Victoria?
" "Who's Victoria, dear boy? Only I and my husband, Ronald, live here..."
I didn't expect this. I was sure; it was here, it was here, I casually touched her hair... No, I can't be mistaken...
"Are you sure? Maybe Victoria lives somewhere nearby? Is she a tall, young blonde? She moved in recently...
" "No, boy, those houses around here are occupied by elderly people...
" "Well, goodbye, sorry for the inconvenience...
Impossible! Surely she didn't lie to me? Although... Well, she didn't go inside, she waited until I left... Maybe she didn't want to see me anymore?" Surely... After all, who am I to date a girl like that? Yes, she definitely doesn't want to see me anymore...
I dragged myself home, and as if on cue, matching my mood, a torrential downpour began, and I felt like crying. After all, I hadn't said anything stupid... I pulled out her chair... I paid the bill... I served her... I was polite... Why? Am I that hopeless?
