Oliver

Known as a remarkable cryptozoological figure, Oliver has generated controversy and media attention worldwide for years. Since settling into a Texas zoo in 1996, his unusual appearance and human-like behavior have been the subject of widespread speculation. Considered a strange chimpanzee or even a monkey-human hybrid, Oliver has become an icon of biological enigmas. However, genetic studies conducted in 1998 unequivocally confirmed that he is a common chimpanzee, shedding new light on his fascinating history.Oliver, the TV star who amazed the world

Now, one of the few cryptozoological mysteries that has been solved. How was the case of the peculiar, chimpanzee-like primate named Oliver explained?

Since 1996, the animal had been housed in a Texas zoo primarily for great apes. It had a bald head and walked freely upright on two legs, and its behavior was strangely human-like. It had previously been featured in newspapers and on television around the world, especially in the 1980s, when it was still owned by New York lawyer Michael Miller. For twenty years, speculation swirled about the mysterious ape. It was considered a strange chimpanzee, an unknown species, or even a hybrid of apes and humans...

After numerous studies of mitochondrial DNA and chromosomes from tissue samples from Oliver and other primates, in 1998 a team of American geneticists (including Dr. John Ely from Trinity University in Texas and Charleen Moore from the Texas University Health Science Center) published their research results in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology .

The thesis revealed that Oliver has a normal cellular karyotype (the presence, number, and arrangement of chromosomes within cells) of the common chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes . Furthermore, he closely resembles specimens from Gabon, West Africa, genetically, suggesting Oliver's likely place of origin.
