Orang-pendek

The orang-pendek is a mysterious, anthropoid ape that supposedly inhabits the jungles of Sumatra. The orang-pendek is a large, anthropoid ape believed to be native to the Sumatran jungle. Covered in reddish-brown fur that gleams in the sunlight, it walks on two legs and resembles a short, powerfully built human. It stands about 1 meter tall, has a powerful chest, very strong arms, and short, slender legs. It has no tail. Its head resembles a gorilla's: a receding forehead, widely spaced eyes, small ears, a distinct, narrow, human-like nose, and a narrow mouth with wide incisors and long, protruding canines. This appearance distinguishes it from all known primates. Since 1993, British traveler and researcher Debbie Martyr has been studying this extremely rare animal. She has collected numerous accounts of encounters with the creature from locals, and has also managed to make casts of the animal's feet and obtained fragments of its fur. The ape-like footprints are distinctly different from those of humans, orangutans, or gibbons, though they share some human and ape characteristics. The flattened sole is typical of humans, while the ape-like footprint is distinctly recessed, with the big toe protruding at a significant angle. Dr. David Chivers of Cambridge University admitted that they belong to an animal unknown to science. The ape's hairs were even subjected to DNA analysis, but their unusual red pigmentation confounded standard DNA analysis. Research is ongoing.
