Skrimsl

In the summer of 1345, a mysterious phenomenon was observed in Lagarflot, a picturesque lake in eastern Iceland, inspiring legends about a creature known as skrimsl. Locals described it as a massive, living creature that sometimes resembled an island. In the 19th century, researcher Sabine Baring-Gould collected local eyewitness accounts and created a sketch of the monster, which became one of the most famous cryptozoological images. Skrimsl, measuring approximately 42 feet long, fascinates both scientists and legend enthusiasts.

Icelandic chronicles recorded the appearance in the summer of 1345 of "a magnificent phenomenon in Lagarflot, which seemed to be a living animal. Sometimes it looked like a large island, other times humps separated by water appeared. No one knew the nature of the creature, no one saw a head or tail, no one is sure what it was." Lagerflot is a long, mountainous lake in eastern Iceland. Icelanders named the monster skrimsl, and it also became the subject of several legends. During the 1860s, the scholar of ancient sagas, Sabine Baring-Gould, then 29 years old, traveled through remote parts of Iceland, painting volcanoes, geysers, and glaciers. At the end of his journey, he arrived one evening at a small settlement. Two men, Skogkotr and Martin, who had traveled from Skordalsvatn, were also there and described skrimsl's appearance to the scholar. The creature is said to have measured approximately 42 feet in length, with a head and neck of 6 feet, a body of 22 feet, and a tail of 18 feet. Baring-Gould included a reproduction of a sketch of the creature in his book. This naive drawing is one of the more credible depictions of lake monsters, as it was made by a man completely unaware of other eyewitness accounts. The drawing shows the creature with fins, although the neck appears somewhat short. A pair of whiskers indicates that the animal is perhaps related to seals or otters, and is certainly a mammal.
