.or maybe?

This is how KT describes his story of meeting face to face:

In October 2003, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, I was playing on the patio with my 2.5-year-old son when he suddenly stopped and asked me, "Who is that little man sitting on our rock fence?" I looked where he was pointing and couldn't see anything... but somehow the area looked different (shimmering?). Later, in January 2004, we were playing in the yard again, this time with my husband, when the most beautiful snow began to fall. It was about to get dark, and I said I wanted to go for a short walk in the woods while my husband watched our son. I stepped into the trees and was somehow surprised by how different everything looked. It's hard to describe; again, the first word that comes to mind is "shimmering." As I rounded a bend in the path, I came face to face, three or four feet away, with a little man who looked like an elf, peering straight at me from behind a tree. It was almost a stereotypical elf: long, pointy ears, a long, funny-shaped nose, very long fingers, and a pointy hat. He wore red clothes and a pointy hat, and his skin was a very light lavender. I shuddered and said, "Oh!" as he stepped back and vanished into thin air.

Was it the product of a tired mind and an active imagination? Perhaps. But like ghost stories, these kinds of events are told by serious people who usually swear they weren't under the influence of alcohol or drugs and that their experiences seemed entirely real.
In his book "Unexplained!", Jerome Clark tells the story of 13-year-old Harry Anderson, who had a strange encounter on a summer night in 1919. Anderson claimed to have seen a column of 20 small people walking toward him in single file. The bright moonlight made them clearly visible, and Anderson could see that they were wearing leather knee-high socks with suspenders. The men were shirtless, bald, and had pale white skin.

They paid no attention to Anderson as they passed and seemed to be mumbling something unintelligible the entire time.

A man from Stowmarket, England, in 1842 claimed that he encountered "fairies" while walking home through a clearing:

There were perhaps a hundred of them, the largest about three feet tall, and the smaller ones were like dolls. They moved in a circle, hand in hand, making no sound. They seemed light and shadowy, as if they didn't have solid bodies. I... saw them the same way I saw the Lord. I ran home and called three women to come back with me and see them. But when we arrived at the spot, all the fairies had vanished. I was completely sober at the time.
