Ingredients
Potatoes 1000 g
Egg 1
Milk 1 cup
Cheese 200 g
Garlic 1 clove
Butter 50 g
Nutmeg 1/3 tsp
Ground black pepper to taste
Spices to taste
Select large, undamaged potatoes of approximately the same size, wash thoroughly, peel, and cut into 2 mm thick slices. Grate the cheese on a coarse grater.
Mix three-quarters of the cheese in a bowl with the milk and egg. Add ground nutmeg, freshly ground black pepper, and seasoning. Mix thoroughly, whisking gently.
Peel the garlic and cut it in half lengthwise. Rub the baking dish thoroughly with garlic, then grease it with butter.
Preheat the oven to 200C (400F). Arrange the potatoes in a circle in the pan, overlapping each circle slightly (it's easier to arrange them from the center of the pan outward). Pour the cheese mixture over the potatoes. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top and arrange pieces of butter. Bake for 45 minutes.
Serve hot, sprinkled with finely chopped green onions, fried onion rings, or crispy bacon strips.
